Rankings Update: 8.05.13 Shake up in the light heavyweight divsion

After each live event, the UFC polls various members of the media to update its rankings in each weight division as well as the pound for pound rankings. With only a couple meaningful bouts at this past weekend's UFC 163, the light heavyweight division is where we saw the most movement:

Champion: Jon Jones

1. Alexander Gustafson +1

2. Lyoto Machida -1

3. Glover Teixeria

4. Phil Davis +3

5. Rashad Evans -1

6. Antonio Nogueira -1

7. Dan Henderson -1

8. Mauricio Rua

9. Gegard Mousasi

10. Ryan Bader

view all updated rankings...

With his win over Lyoto Machida (formerly ranked no.1 contender), Phil Davis moved himself up three spots, putting him in fourth. With the loss, Machida dropped one spot, pushing Alexander Gustafson into the top spot. Coincidentally Gustafson is the next to fight for the title, so now Jon Jones will fight the consensus number one contender.

I don't think Machida and Davis should have traded positions, but it is a little strange. Two of the three guys above Davis are guys he has wins over, but then, he's ahead of Rashad, who also beat Davis.Fight Matrix has a pseudo-scientific list, which does not have these issues.

These UFC rankings are a total waste of time, they are nothing but a popularity contest, there is no actual system behind them.

These rankings make about as much sense as James Toney.

Machida's placement is a bit ridiculous. He has 3 wins and 4 loses in his last 7 fights, and is 2 & 2 in his last 4. Both Phil and definitely Glover should be placed higher.

They did it with Stipe and Roy, so it shouldn't surprise us that they're doing it again. Butthurt media are still butthurt at the decision.

No way! I can't believe X is ranked higher than Y.

Presumably it's because your ranking is a placement based on the aggregate value of your recent wins/losses. You don't necessarily switch spots if you beat someone higher than you. Machida last two wins were Hendo and Bader with a loss to the champ before that.Davis last two wins were Prado and Vinny. Machida was already at the top and Davis is climbing.
