White paying Trujillo win bonus despite NC determination

The Unified Rules of mixed martial arts prohibit kicking or kneeing a downed opponent. However, in the rapidly changing environment of an MMA fight, determining whether a fighter is grounded or not can be tough to figure out with the benefit of video replay, never mind in the middle of a fight.

Adding to the complexity, the downed fighter too has a responsibility not to duck into for example a knee that thrown with legal intention.

Wednedsay night at UFN 27, Abel Trujillo finished Roger Bowling with a knee-punch combination with a knee that was ruled illegal. Referee Rob Hunds determined that the knees were not intentional, and thus the bout was declared a No Contest.

UFC president Dana White had a different perspective, and will be awarding Trujillo his win money.

"Those shots were not illegal," said White at the post-fight press con. "The first one hit him in the chest, and the second hit him in the shoulder... That kid should've won that fight, and I'm going to pay him his win bonus."

Still photos don't tell the whole story. You can clearly see from the slowed down gif that I made that before the knee struck, bowling's knee was on the mat and the force of Trujillo's knee lifted bowling's knee off the mat. I don't know how you can dispute that....the gif clearly shows it.

The knee is so close it is hard to tell to me. However I agree its a dumb rule.

Pay both a win bonus the ufc can afford it. I thought the fight was gonna win fight of the night while it was happening. Rematch this fight, they were both throwing hard and landing. It was fun to watch.

again, according to the commission, this is the definition of a grounded opponent, as far as i can determine:"Currently, the Unified Rules define a grounded opponent as "any fighter who has more than the just the soles of their feet on the ground (i.e. could have one shin or one finger down to be considered a downed fighter)."'http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=forum.posts&thread=2168965&page=1

Let me ask all the "sole of the foot" defenders this question:If the ref had the right angle to clearly see Bowlings knee/shin were NOT touching the ground...can any of you honestly say the ref still would have considered him "downed" because part of the side/top of his foot was touching the ground?(if you answer yes you are a liar. Lying just to try and "win" an argument)Every one of us knows damn well that if the ref had a clear view that his knee/shin was off the mat, and that only his foot was touching the ground, it would have been a KO win.

So the still photos that clearly show his knee off the mat before the strike landed are a hoax?
