FOX releases statement on Sonnen's inappropriate Rihanna joke

During last night's edition of Fox Sports Live, commenator and UFC fighter Chael Sonnen may have crossed the line in a joke he made referencing pop singer Rihanna. Today, FOX issued a statement:

"FOX Sports regrets the comments Chael Sonnen made during last night's edition of FOX Sports Live. They were an inappropriate attempt at humor that Sonnen acknowledges shouldn't have been made and he apologizes to anyone who may have been offended by his remarks."

The remarks Sonnen made below were in reference to last weekend's boxing bout between Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez:

"Look, Floyd (Mayweather) needs to keep doing what he's doing, which is fighting complete tomato cans that we've never heard of before. I've never seen anybody in the history of America get so rich and so famous off of having complete wimps throwing punch at their faces. I know what you're saying. You're saying, ‘Well, it's happened before, what about Rihanna?' ... Too soon? Was it too soon?"

jesus christ, I am so tired of the whole 'political correctness' bullshit outrage the man said something that was inappropriate at work, he gets slapped down for it, that's what happens in an adult professional world imagine sonnen said something like 'this linebacker hit that defender so hard it was like a guy flying out of the tower on 9/11 or it was like a soldier getting blown up by an ied'. he would be disciplined for that as well, as he rightfully should be. but would there be all this immature outrage of 'omg our society is so sissy we should be able to take a joke damn those liberals' let me educate you on the matter, the 'political correctness' is a propaganda term invented by the right to shame those who defend minority rights ask yourself, when was the last time you heard somebody being accused of being too politically correct while making a 'joke' that is not about race, gender, or sexual orientation? there is your answer

No he's saying Rihanna is only famous for being beaten if you can read. I'm not trying to come at you but anyone who doesn't see that this is a literal slap in the face to the experience of domestic violence survivors is a fool. I work with them for a living and their experiences are constantly trivialized. This has nothing to do with “pussification" It has to do with Chael overreaching with his shtick and being a prick. He deserves no less than what Miguel Torres got for what was at least a quote and not his own opinion. F Chael and anyone defending him.

My first thought exactly. How dare he insult the woman beater? Are you shitting me?Then I thought about it longer and evaluated every possible way this pussified western civilization could interpret the statement... and concluded that some 'progressives' may find it insensitive to Rhianas past experiences, and therefore Fox should issue a formal apology to appease the spineless demographic and maximize ad revenue. This demo is growing at exponential rates, so you can't ignore it.

Well, he is basically saying that that's how Rihanna became rich and famous. I agree that it's more of a knock on Brown, though.
