White: For whatever reason people don't like Jon Jones

UFC president Dana White says light heavyweight champion Jon Jones should go on to be the greatest UFC fighter in history, that he, like Floyd Mayweather, gets a bad rap. However, White concedes that for hard to pin down reasons, people often don't like Jon Jones.

“I think Jon Jones is one of those guys that gets a bad rap from everybody else too, saying he’s too big for that division, he doesn't deserve to be there, he should be in the f------ heavyweight division,” said White.

“If the guy makes 205 he’s a light heavyweight, okay? And all the criticism on how big he is… well now he’s fighting a guy who’s just as big as him, and has great stand up, has the reach, the leg reach, all the things that people have said that Jones always has over his opponents, this guy’s gonna have too. Which makes it very interesting…”

“Fighters are what they are. Jon Jones comes off as a heel because people don’t like him. For whatever reason people don't like him, you know….”

White was asked if you can attribute it to racism?

“There’s plenty of black fighters," said White. "People loved Rampage. People love Anderson. I don’t think it’s a black or a white thing. I think its something about his personality that people don’t like.”

“I think there’s no doubt that Jon Jones, if he continues the path that he’s on, he’s gonna break tons of records and he’s gonna possibly go down as the greatest ever.”

“He’s so young he’s still got to so many things he can accomplish and you know it’s like when you talk about breaking the record for most title defences in the light heavyweight division, if you look at the fighters that Jon Jones has fought in breaking that record, you might as well consider that record already broken.”

"The thing where Jones is very similar to Anderson Silva is that he does s--- that nobody’s ever done before. If you look at what he did to Lyoto Machida… who does that to Machida ?”

“Nobody does that to Machida. It wasn’t even like it was on the ground, and he caught him in submission. He did that thing standing in a way that people were shocked when he went down."

“Machida can put somebody out. Shogun is a killer who can put somebody out. Here’s the difference between Jones and a lot of other guys… nobody in the light heavyweight division has ever done what Jon Jones has done. You know what I mean…”

“I don’t care who has the record title defenses, they haven't fought the guys that Jones has fought. Jones has walked through straight killers. Killers. His athleticism, his explosiveness, everything… he’s likely to go on to be the greatest ever.”

Haha yeah I'm a fan.  It doesn't matter in this case though.  I defend greatness of athletes whether I love or hate them.  I hate Tom Brady, but I'm not going to act like he's not one of the greatest football players of all time.

kingkoopa - Jones is a troll lolHe comes off like a douche or a hipster when he is asked about other fighters. He demeans their talent and acts dismissive of everyone and talks as though everyone is a chump. A lot if ppl in the mma community come from martial arts backgrounds or have some sort of appreciation for the philosophy and culture of martial arts. Part of that is to be humble or to put it plainly a lot of it is basically "don't be a douche"Jones comes off like a douche because of What he says. Plus when he actually says something good about another fighter it doesnt come if genuine due to his tone and body language. Thus ppl call him fake Then you add in that he didn't take a short notice fight while he is the champ. Yeah it was the smartest thing to do but it also came off cowardly since his skills are so great. He acts like he has great skills (which he does) but then was to fearful of a short notice fight. in the martial arts community cowardice is looked down upon. And again there is a large martial arts community in mma Phone PostLazer - This plus it's clear as fuck the guy is just not genuine. Religious people don't do lots of stuff this guy has. I don't think there is any reason to hate any fighter (although I did not like Brock) but it does not mean we need to be fans either. Right now there is a thread "poor Jones LOL", check it. No one gives a F. This is exactly what he earned.http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=forum.posts&forum=1&thread=2228865&page=7

He has not had any real struggles or wars in his career. People find it harder to relate to a guy who just says he wants to be champion and walks through everybody in a few years. He then beats every guy that is supposed to humble him. Only way people will like him is if he loses to somebody similar to him and comes back and reclaims title. That said I really don't like the guy. Mainly jackson thing.

people don't like him because of his fake "good guy" persona. I thought his DUI might change things but he's just as much of a sanctimonious phony now as he was before. But, he's still the best.

I think Jones' attitude has a lot to do with his age. He's your typical young, over-confident, cocky guy. Let's be honest, many of us shared these traits when we were his age. As he gets older, gains experience, maybe gets humbled once or twice, I think his attitude will change and fans will start to warm up to him.

i am disappointed that AG insult Jones' character , if he thinks those things he should still remain respectful and just keep it to himself but i know the sport is so much about drama and image that im not too surprised, just disappointed, even if he saw things it only makes him look bad to talk in this way in my opinion

Only UFC fighter I've ever seen tell fans no for autographs.   Went on a moral high horse about DUI's and went ahead and got one or two.

White knows why. It's his attitude. It's off-putting. Tremendous athlete though.
