Wineland: Stoppage was bull$#!@

Eddie Wineland had a great first round vs. UFC Interim champion Renan Barao. But 30 seconds into the 2nd round, this happened...

Highly-regarded referee Yves Lavigne jumped in and stopped it.

Wineland has asked at post fight press conference if the stoppage was early.

"Personal opinion, I think bulls---," said Wineland forcefully. "He caught me with a great kick. I was by no means out - I was on my way back up. But you know the referees have their own discretion, and that’s what he felt was the right call.

“My hat’s off to Renan. It was a good kick.”

Reffing is the single most thankless task in MMA - no fighter, ever, thought he won a fight because of a ref, but an audible percentage of the losers do. In Wineland's case, he did not think Lavigne was incompetent, he just thought he could have kept fighting.

UFC president Dana White who does not hesitate when he sees poor officiating, simly pointed out that there are inherently calls in reffing that are difficult, and that the call was solid.

"It’s one of those tough calls," said White. "Trust me, I don’t like when a fight is stopped and a guy jumps right back up. But you know, he got blasted with that kick. And that’s a nasty kick that knocks people out and he looked wobbly even when he got up. It’s just one of those tough ones.

“If I thought it was, I’d be smashing the ref. But that was a tough one.”

What do you think UG? Could Wineland have intelligently defended himself?

Barao's win streak now goes to 32-0.

I only have the gif to look at but imho it looks like the heel bounced of the side of the chin. That's not a miss.

I was fine with the stoppage. Wineland was clearly hurt from the kick, and the follow up strike after he was dropped. He was in turtle position after that, facing away from Barao and eating more strikes. I wouldn't consider that an intelligent defense position, especially after what Barao did to him moments before that point.

I thought the stoppage was good when I was watching it.. I'd hate to see him go all the way out. Wineland did seem to be getting the better of the exchanges though

I'm biased, but imo it was a bad stoppage. Here's my reasoning-1) the ref was not in a position to see how the fighter in question (Eddie in this scenario) responded to the kick. Refs shouldn't stops fights when out of position. 2) ref's should take in to consideration who is fighting, specifically the weight class of the fighters. Middleweight and up I understand the want to not let the fighters take extra unanswered punishment. These were bantamweights, let him (Eddie) take a few extra shots while the ref positions himself better to see what's really happening. Especially for a championship fight. It was a good kick from barao. Eddie will be back.

WINELAND was covering up well.I would have liked to see the fight go on a bit longer for a more more definitive end but I don't think Yves really fucked up.KO of the night seems off considering it was a TKO ref stoppage.

It's dangerous when you begin to dismiss the state of a fighter and the punishment he MAY receive. I understand wanting to stop the fight only AFTER the vicious shots have landed, but part of good ref'ing is knowing when a fighter is truly about to take some nasty shots and avoiding that.
