UFC releases #6 middleweight Yushin Okami

In a baffling move, the UFC has released middleweight Yushin Okami, 32, after a single loss.

While Okami was knocked out by Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in his last fight, he won the three previous matches, to Buddy Roberts, Alan Belcher, and Hector Lombard. Lombard remains with the UFC, despite losing two of his three fights in the UFC, and a far, far higher price tag.

Okami is currently listed by the UFC as the #6 contender on the roster:
Champion : Chris Weidman
1. Anderson Silva
2. Vitor Belfort
3. Ronaldo Souza
4. Michael Bisping
5. Mark Munoz
6. Yushin Okami
7. Luke Rockhold
8. Francis Carmont
9. Costa Philippou
10. Chael Sonnen

Once called "the best fighter to ever come out of Japan" by UFC president Dana White, Okami entered the organization in 2006, and leaves with an impressive 13-5 record. Of his 18 fights, 10 ended by decision, which may have factored into the calculation.

A fan site from the UK reached out to White for an explanation, and received several replies.

MA UK @MMA__UK
just out of curiosity why did you cut Yushin Okami?

Dana White @danawhite
our roster is packed

MA UK @MMA__UK
Surely if that's the case then others in the MW division who aren't in the top 10 should be cut ahead of Okami?

Dana White @danawhite
yup u will see people get cut and come back. Always been that way

MA UK @MMA__UK
any room for Okami to come back if he gets some some wins elsewhere?

Dana White @danawhite
always

White expanded on the remarks with Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole.

"He's been with us forever," said White. "He was always a tough guy and was right up there, but it's almost like he'd become a gatekeeper. I like Okami, and you've heard me say this many times, that a win over Yushin Okami meant something.

"But he was never able to get over the hump and win one of those [significant] fights. We have a lot of guys coming in and I've been saying this all year: We have a full roster and there are guys who deserve opportunities. When you bring guys in, someone has to go. That's why these fights are so meaningful."

In addition to Okami, four other fighters were released:
Mike Ricci
Yuri Villefort
Joao Zeferino
Keith Wisniewski

Okami is reportedly in talks with the WSoF.

What do you think UG? Should the UFC have given Okami more than a single loss before releasing him? If not, why? And who is Okami likely to sign with? How do you think Rumble Johnson vs Yushin Okami in WSoF would go?

It seems like you'd want to have guys around with lesser names that up and comers can beat to get to contender level in the mind of your audience. Okami and Fitch were those guys. Lil nog and Bisping haven't been so memorable recently and they're both top ten, maybe they're next.

I'd rather he didn't quite frankly. I love that Dana posts here and he not only has great interactions with the fans, but straight up plays the crazy rich philanthropist at times and helps ppl out...But when there's a negative thread like this -- a BLAF post usually follows a very specific pattern. 1. Dana quotes someone particularly stupid or incendiary2. Insults them and tells everyone to chill3. His post gets quoted 40-50 times by new users who are still star-struck by Dana, each one commenting on how badly he PWNED the UGer or SMACKED DA TASTA OUTTA DEY MOWF4. Dana gets quoted by some smarter ppl and is asked some follow up / probing inquiries since this isn't the MMAHour, but he's also quoted by some more retards who say shit like, "PRIDE NEVER DIES, SUCK MA COWK DANA, IMMA FIND U BOXERCISE BITCH, YO MOMMA CAN'T EVEN WRITE A BOOK."5. At which point, Dana only responds to the retards, and employs an incredibly subtle straw man argument by pretending anyone with an IQ above Bloodstain Lane's doesn't exist6. ????7. Profit

He's done it before, but he's the definition of an unfairly targeted grappler. When ppl throw around the term LnP without having watched fights where it was actually applicable, i.e. early UFCs or Prides, they really do a disservice imoEven when Okami isn't being particularly active with subs or strikes, he's almost always going for a transition or some move. As long as a fighter is staying active and working towards something, I've a lot of patience with their fights, and while he may not have KO power, he does have very clean and beautifully adapted striking for his grappling-centric approach. But as most ppl are pointing out, wtv his style may have been and whether or not you liked him, this just shows what a stupid fuck Dana or Joe or whoever the fuck made this decision is. Bad enough when you get a great fighter like Chael, but you're too impatient to set him up properly and let him earn his shot -- instead having him rebound off a loss with a title fight in a division he hadn't touched for 6 years and went 0-2 in --, but now you're regularly cutting ppl with great records because they're not fan-friendly enough?
