Mike Tyson: No way I would have beaten Royce Gracie in 93

Mike Tyson appeared recently on UFC Tonight, and was asked how he felt an MMA fight with Royce Gracie would have gone in 1993, when the modern version of the sport debuted.

Royce would have taken the fight. His father tried to get Joe Louis to agree to a mixed rules bout, and Tyson was the most feared fighter on earth at the time; a win over him would have been incalcuably large.

Indeed, Royce would have fought anyone.

"I would fight the devil himself if he stepped into the Octagon," said Royce during this period.

If they had fought, Tyson does not like his chances.

"Well, in '93, I was in prison, so there would not have been a fight," said Tyson speaking practically. "But there is no way I would have won. I had no idea what was going on with that type of fighting and would’ve been taken by surprise. I would have had to train in that particular art of fighting for that to happen. That’s a particular art. You are not going to go in there with your just your hands, you need to have a great ground game as well. You also need a great wrestling game to be successful. You have to have both skills, wrestling and boxing. That’s the truth."

How do you think Tyson would have done in MMA with some sprawl training?

I personally doubt there was any way Remco would beat Mike Tyson. Remco was admittedly terrified of the much smaller Weit and said himself he was pretty much resigned to losing the match. Having Tyson across the cage would be a psychological nightmare he would be doubtful to overcome.

I wonder if the experts who watched Tyson back on the day actually watched Tyson back in the day.Flurry, clinch, ref separates them. Flurry clinch ref separates. Over and over. Ya Tyson got a lot of first round KO's. he also had a lot of long ass fights. One Tyson touch does not equal death and he'd have once chance before he's on the mat. Everyone Royce fought ended up on the ground with him. All within the first minute or two.I think Royce wins by tap out landing less then 5 punches and not even putting on a submission. This is UFC 1. Give Tyson a three month camp to train wrestling and get used to rolling and it's a completely different story.

its the same as the know it all keyboard warriors who think little LW's and under of today would win early ufc tourney's if transported back in time. forgetting its 3/4 real bare knuckle fights with much larger guys and thinking the skill is the end all be all of a fight. Clay guida is a decently ranked LW in ufc and some tards think he easily could win an early ufc tourny, but when you ask him that exact question he laughs and says no fukin way. maybe I beat Jimmerson he says, but there weight classes for reason he ads. He wouldnt even enter one of those much less win (his words). but ask the know it all keyboard warriors, most of whom havent trained a day in their life or EVER been in a real fight, Clay wins those without breaking a sweat. contrary to what the man himself had to say about it.

Tyson had a much better chance in ufc1 or ufc2 than ufc3! although a missed punch by him on Remco would end up just like Remco/Weit.Shamrock in ufc3 would be getting him down and subbing him. same with Royce. Even Kimo could have givin him some trouble. (this is not boxing people). I watched Tyson back in the day and am a HUGE fan of him. I'd love to think he could have been the boxer with the best sprawl and TD defense and could power out of any BJJ holds on the ground, but I've decided to use my brain on this one.

Haven't seen the fight in ages (I think I've seen it??). But this was my recollection. Not trying to be trite, but is there a single example of any pure striker beating a grappler trying to grapple in the old days?Until then, I will always abide by Renzo's wisdom that in the jungle, the lion is king. But when you throw him in the water, he's just shark bait.
