Dolce: Cormier can make 205 'easy' and will be champion

Daniel Cormier had to miss his shot at Olympic gold in 2008 when his kidneys failed in Beijing. It nearly killed him. Cormier was cutting weight to compete at 211 lbs.

The symptoms of Acute Renal Failure (ARF) include dry mouth, lack of urine, headache, lower back pain, nausea, and drowsiness.  ARF can be treated with fluids and a quick rehydration, but it can also become Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) if the fighter's kidneys give out from the strain.

"It was very scary," Cormier told USA TODAY Sports. "I was in the hospital. I was getting IV bags, not really eating food. I couldn't recover from the weight cut."

"I had been cutting weight for a really long time. I think I started when I was 13, but I was doing it the wrong way. I put (a plastic sweatsuit) on a week before I weighed in, and I would just start sucking out that water. ... Your body can only take so much. I was beating it down every time. It was very scary."

Cormier now plans to fight a lightheavyweight. While trying to make 205 for someone who nearly died trying to make 211 might seem terrifying, nutrition and training guru Mike Dolce says it would be no problem.

"He was banned from competing in that Olympics and he was already over there and he had such a bad weight cut that he was banned and they wouldn't allow him to compete because of that weight cut," Dolce told FightHype. "I was speaking to Daniel and we went over that entire situation and again I saw the flaws in their methods. According to his training now and what his body weight is right now, we make the adjustments that I know that I have in my arsenal and I think 205 will be easy for Daniel to where I don't know anybody in the world that would be able to stand up to him and compete against him in the weight class."

In an interview with the Brazilian site Sexto Round, Dolce explanded on the remarks.

"Daniel can be a world champion at heavyweight, but also at light heavyweight, 205," said Dolce as transcribed by MMAFighting. "Unfortunately I was not working with him when he was training and competing in the Olympics. If I was, he would have made weight, had no problem, been healthy and he probably would have been an Olympic gold medalist."

I actually only say it because in an interview I heard him say something similar. He said he was still really disappointed about the Olympics, because he failed the one thing he had to do, control his diet and manage his weight. But I do agree with what you're saying.

Ya, iunno why that guys trying to correct you and sound smart...Cormier just made Olympic captain for the US wrestling team and didn't even manage one fight as captain, effectively ending his career and last chance to wrestle/win gold...Pretty devastatingBut I do disagree with you that the issue is as simple as he couldn't get his weight under control. He always kind of had a mild belly when he wrestled, and it didn't make him any less explosive or cardio-intense from the few matches I've seen of him... And quite frankly, a lot of wrestlers prefer some weight over being shredded, and if he had been doing the same weight cuts since 13, he probably didn't think anything of it In retrospect, you're completely correct -- less fat would've made him need to cut less weight AND it would've meant a much larger % of water in his body TO cut, but I don't think he was just being a Rampage or Ricky Hatton, balooning 60+Lbs in-between matches... Probably just never imagined how serious it was or how sick he could get

If he loses fat the right way, dieting for weight loss, then cuts weight by dehydrating a similar or even slightly less amount -- I think he'd be good...I'm no Dr. or Nutrionist, but I know my basic biology and the fact that water is virtually only in your muscles. An average white adult is 60% water and that value fluctuates from 40% to 80% depending on fat%. There's pretty much no water in fat, it's the reason women's breasts make them average closer to 40-50% water Vs. 60-70% for men. It's also the reason water % fluctuates so greatly over the course of your life span, with an infant's water weight closer to 75%, and why the really jacked body-builder types often cut such a disgusting amount of weight -- by contrast it'd be brutally difficult for Nelson to cut any weight (water-loss) as opposed to losing weight (fat-burn/muscle-loss).

I think it's you that has no reading comprehension. Did I say "he lost the ONLY opportunity that he'll ever have, to wrestle in the Olympics"? No, I didn't, I said "He lost THE opportunity to wrestle I'm the Olympics". Which he absolutely did. Now, if you're gonna be a faggot for no reason, at least make sure you're right.

I like Dolce, I like most of his ideas on nutrition, and he is enjoying great success with his fighters, but I really wish he could present his ideas without the night shift infomercial style delivery. Obviously it seems to be working extremely well for him and I wish him all the best, but I really find it hard to listen to.

No it is not.  You said he didn't wrestle in the Olympics I clearly pointed out that he did.  You can't get your facts straight AND you have a reading comprehension problem?

That's 40lbs. I don't know if you've seen Cormier in person but his limbs and frame is huge. His arms, legs and shoulder width is massive.185 is too far IMO

IMO cormier could fight at 185. 224 and still noticeable fat on him.
