Machida dropping to 185 to chase title

Lyoto Machida has captured the UFC light heavyweight title, lost it, and fought for it again. However with another shot at that title unlikely, is making the move to middleweight and hopefully work towards a title. Current friend and training partner, Anderson Silva, is also in the division, but Machida's isn't thinking about it:

"We are friends, but it's too early to think about that," Machida (19-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) said prior to Saturday's UFC Fight Night 30 headliner. "I'm just arriving in this class, and I have to keep my focus on this fight."

"I don't know about the future," Machida said. "That's why I say to everybody, I'm just arriving. It's hard to say about a title shot. Everybody is asking about it, but I prefer not to talk about it."

"I don't know how long he's going to fight," he said. "That's why I don't think about that."

Machida said he likely would have dropped to 185 pounds whether or not he'd lost a close decision to Phil Davis at UFC 163. He said Silva's defeat to Weidman had nothing to do with his decision to change weight classes.

"I just dropped down because I was going to fight against (Jon) Jones, and that couldn't happen," Machida told MMAjunkie.com. "The UFC gave me an opportunity to fight at 185. I want to stay active."

This is very different than his goals in 2009. He actually wanted to fight at heavyweight if he defended his title 5 times.http://www.examiner.com/article/lyoto-machida-wants-brock-lesnar-eventually

War Machida. That is so great to hear he is finally going to fight in his proper weight class. He has shown great loyalty and respect to Silva over the years. I think I remember hearing that the deal was that as long as Silva isn't champ, Machida could drop, right? Knowing how serious Silva gets about this topic, I wouldn't be surprised if he had Silva's approval. Either way, the new Machida era has begun....

He should have ALWAYS been at 185-he looked chubbed to me at lhw.Imagine how much faster his shit is going to be-I hope he kept his cardio.I think he's going to make Munoz look silly on his feet,he already has good take down defense and there's no way Mark is going to be fast enough to hit the td, after he gets tired of getting kicked in the face and goes for it.Somewhere in the middle of the 1st

I don't blame him.  LHW is not for everyone.  These are guys who move like lighter weights and hit like heavy weights. If you are not a natural HW you will be out muscled by these guys. I don't know if it was the Davis loss that put the icing on the cake for him, but his last three losses cam from guys who may be natural HWs:  Rampage, Davis and Jones. I suspect Rua will soon join him if he doesn't retire.

I don't think silva is interested in defending the title anymore even if he does win. That's the impression I got.
