Dan Lauzon: Through a rough patch

Steph Daniels caught up with World Series of Fighting lightweight Dan Lauzon ahead of his fight Saturday with undefeated Justin Gaethje. Lauzon is 17-4, has been fighting professionally for seven and a half years, is the youngest fighter ever in the UFC, and is on a five-fight win streak. "The Upgrade" has also been stabbed, and had a public falling out with older brother Joe. However, Dany explains that that is all behind him, and that he trains by day, and is a repo man by night.

"In the past I wasn't very focused," said Lauzon. "When I first got started as a pro, I was only 18 and running around a little bit crazy. These past couple years I've tried to settle down and stay focused. I want to get better, so now I go to the gym every day, and I work at night. I'm just working and training, working and training. It sounds boring, but I'm trying to stay as focused as possible, and keep my eye on the prize."

"Me and Joe were real close when we were younger, then we kind of grew apart for a few years. At one point, we didn't talk for close to two years. Literally, we didn't speak a word to each other. If I was somewhere that he was, I just didn't go near him and he didn't go near me."

"Now we train together, and we're grappling all the time. We box and do stand-up together again. We meet two or three times a week, just me and him, just the two of us, and we just train together. We've gotten a lot closer these days. It happens with families all over. We're gonna butt heads here and there. With us both fighting professionally on such high profile stages, it's gonna come to light and people are gonna see it.

"We've gotten though a really rough patch in our lives, and now everything is just really good. I've grown up a lot over the last few years, so that helped a lot. Now we see eye to eye more, and we're actually able to sit down and just be brothers and be there for each other."

Joe gave him that nickname IIRC. Don't know where you got the keyboard warrior stuff lol

How do you know it wasn't a reference to his big brother? Seems quite a stretch that he was calling himself an upgrade over non-fighters who as you state "criticize pro-fighters from behind a keyboard". I doubt that very much indeed.

It wasn't a reference to Joe. It was a reference to people who criticize pro-fighters from behind a keyboard. He is an 'upgrade' from those kinds of people. Know anyone like that?

I always thought Dan's nickname "The Upgrade" was a bit of an insult to Joe. It's not a great nickname for a guy who has achieved very little in comparison to his big brother.

I remember about a year ago I asked Joe about why he dropped his bro and I got the shit kicked out of me karma wise. I never meant any disrespect but it kinda came off sounding disrespectful. But the conclusion basically was that it is was serious personal differences between the 2 and you'd really have to have a brother that your real tight with to understand.

I wonder what the circumstances were that led to their distancing.  Glad to see they've worked things out though, it's always sad when siblings have a shit relationship.

It's good that they are talking. It is a sad situation when siblings are at odds...

Thanks so much for posting! I've been a fan of the Lauzon brothers for a long time, and always enjoy being able to write about them. Hopefully I can get one with Joe before his fight.
