Lawler making a run at the UFC title, at long last

Robbie Lawler started fighting in 2001, and the next year the Miletich camp protege was in the UFC. There he went 4-3, and was gone by 2004. He then fought for the highest bidder, including Icon, ILF< Pride, Elite XC, and Strikeforce, returning to the UFC only this year.

Lawler went just 1-3 his last four fights in Strikeforce. However, now fighting out of ATT in Coconut Creek, FL, Lawler is white hot in the UFC, going 3-0 in 2013, capped with Saturday's beating of what had been the welterweight heir apparent Rory MacDonald.

Just like that, Lawler is a top contender for the welterweight title. At the UFC 167 post-fight press conference, president Dana White expressed enthusiasm and appreciattion for "Ruthless."

"The thing is about Robbie Lawler, I'm the one that brought Robbie Lawler into the UFC," said White as transcribed by MMAMania. "Robbie Lawler when he was younger, all he gave a s--- about was making money. 'I want to fight where whoever is going to pay me the most money. I need money.'"

"And there's been so many times that Robbie and I have talked throughout the years when he fought for other organizations and he'd be like 'I want to come back and fight for you guys. I want to come back and fight for the UFC.' And I'd say, 'kid, it makes no sense. I'm not going to pay you what these guys are paying you. It doesn't make sense here. They need you over there and they've got to pay you whatever the hell to keep you.'"

"Now, we bought Strikeforce and he's back in the UFC, he's a completely different animal. He doesn't talk about money anymore. Now it's about winning that title. He's getting older now. he's not this young, crazy kid anymore."

"It's about before this opportunity goes away, he wants a run at the title. And he's doing it."

Him shutting down Rory the way he did, I'll say he has a good shot at the belt. Lawler vs. Hendricks while GSP takes a break.

Was so happy to see him land those big shots on Rory last night. I'd love to see Lawler Diaz 2 to be honest.

Dana White is absolutely correct, those organizations paid Robbie a lot of money to be one of the main faces of their divisions. Those organizations held most of their talent at 185lbs divisions, that's where they told Rob to fight. I was praying for the moment Rob could return home to the UFC to fight guys his size. The fact that Rob was fighting well against guys that were 25 lbs heavier than him on fight night is a testament to his ability. I get asked all the time what the biggest difference between now and then. ATT has been tremendous and Robbie continues to learn there, but the biggest difference is nobody can hold him down at 170. He's just too strong. So it opens him up to be able to use his feet and legs like we've been seeing. We know we aren't gonna get held on the ground. At the time when Hughes was ending his career, it was so frustrating knowing that I still had the best welterweight in the world next to me and those organizations were destroying his potential by doing catch weight fights between 205lbers when Rob should have been back at 170lbs. I couldn't wait for Rob to fight Koscheck and GSP at the time. Thank God the UFC came calling. Thank You Dana! Rob is thrilled to be fighting in the UFC again, I never seen him happier and fighting with so much purpose.

I bet Diaz would come out of 'retirement' for a fight with Lawler. Definitely.

Lawler vs Diaz was by far my favorite fight I've ever seen. He came up short in that one. But I was beyond excited to see his hand raised last night. Cinderella man stories are great, but I would be absolutely stoked to see him continue his streak. Win or loose, guy comes to fight! How can you not root for that as a fan?
