Invicta's Shannon Knapp sees validation not threat in UFC

INVICTA FC was the undisputed world's premier women's MMA organization. Then the UFC added a 135 lb. division. Invicta's founder and president Shannon Knapp expressed little concern, noting “they’re doing one weight class; I’ve got five.”

Now the UFC will have two women's weight classes -  115 lbs. and 135 lbs. Further, 105 lb female fighters will fight up and 145 lbs female fighters will fight down and 125 pound female fighters will fight up or down. So the line up will be head to head. Further, the UFC is an institutionally highly competitive company, one in which the president gleefully holds up a tombstone with the names of rivals promotions on it.

Still, Knapp maintains a good relationship with her former employers, and sees the developments not as a threat, but positively.

“I look at it as validation,” said Knapp to MMAJunkie's Ben Fowlkes. “It’s validation that we really are making a difference. I look at it as a validation for all the athletes, that they’re getting noticed. I think that’s hugely important for the sport right now, especially the females.”

“I may be a nice person, but I’m not a stupid person. I’m going to continue to do what I do and focus on that. What they do over there, I have a good relationship with them so it’s not like I don’t have a heads-up or don’t know. As for my fighters, I would never hinder someone from advancement, because I think that advancement helps both sides. It helps them and it helps Invicta.”

"It’s always going to be a victory for me if we’re making a difference. It’s never been about money for me. It’s always been about keeping Invicta going. Obviously, you have to make money to do that, but I’ve never been too concerned with making sure that all that money ends up in my pocket.”

I wasn't really interested in this card. But I'm gonna order it just to support Knapp. Just feel like she has her head on straight. And if there's going to be a second successful MMA organization, I'd be happy knowing that she's running it. No idea if her being a woman has anything to do with it. But Coker, Rebney, Vadim, and even Atencio all just seemed to be too caught up with thinking that they could compete with the UFC instead of being smart enough to work with them. If the pool of women with exposure dwindles too much for her to keep putting on full women cards, I think it will actually benefit her. The real move is to become the official D-league for the UFC. If a fighter like Sergio Pettis had a platform to be exposed on while he was coming up, than the UFC wouldn't have to do it themselves (at a loss) and could keep their roster/cards packed with more proven fighters. It's the same system the NBA and NFL use with the NCAA, and it works!

Knapp is doing great and who knows maybe Uncle Dana can find something for her to do in the UFC once he takes all there top talent. DFW could finally take a fuckin day off.

I should add though, that I don't think for a minute that Knapp's not thinking about it. She says all the right things, but she's too smart of a business person not to be thinking a few steps ahead.

Wow, I didn't even have this card on my radar. Promotion for this one has been pretty quiet. Knapp seems cool and I really like what Invicta is doing.

I like Knapp, and I think Invicta is doing a top notch job at this point. I'm looking forward to this card. I think there's a lot of talent out there in WMMA and at this point the UFC exposure and opportunity is good for these girls. There may come a point where the UFC's reach into WMMA starts to become a problem for Invicta, but I don't think they're there yet.
