Getting to know Felice Herrig

The ever awesome Steph Daniels conducted a more personal than usual interview with the ever awesome Felice Herrig. The strawweight fights Tecia Torres at INVICTA FC 7, live via online PPV on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from the Star Pavilion in Kansas City, MO.

Stephie Daniels: You love your costumes. Did you dress up a lot as a kid, or go all out on Halloween?

Felice Herrig: I think that's why I love my costumes and Halloween so much; my parents never let us dress up. As a kid, I never got to get dressed up; I was the kid who went to school with no Halloween costume. My parents were very devout Christians and they thought it was a demonic holiday [laughs]. I ended up developing my own sense of style, though.

People look at me now and think that I'm spoiled, this and that, but everything that I have right now, I've earned. I grew up with five kids in my family, and my parents were actually pretty poor, so we didn't have a lot of luxuries. I never once got new school clothes until I started working a babysitting job when I was 14 years old. I got my first real job when I turned 16, as soon as I was old enough to work.

I'm doing everything now that I missed out on as a kid. I wouldn't say that I never grew up, because I definitely matured as an adult and learned values and morals, but I would say I'm still a child at heart, and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I missed out on a lot of things that kids got to do.

SD: You recently signed with a big talent agency. When are we going to be seeing you in the movies or on television?

FH: That's a good question. The agency knows that my fighting has to go hand in hand with any entertainment stuff I do. It's kind of like my little "in" into the industry. They know when I'm in fight camp, I'm all in 100%, and focus only on my training.

I have started acting classes at Second City in Chicago. Before they try to line up a movie for me, they're going to try to line up things like Dancing With The Stars, and things like that. They want me to do things that will get my name out there a little bit first and show my personality a bit. I want to make sure I get plenty of acting classes under my belt, too. The last thing we want is to get a movie and then it flops because I couldn't act or something. I'm taking baby steps, for sure.

SD: We didn't get to see your walkout for your last fight. Did that bother you?

FH: you put so much effort into it, and the people at home didn't get to see it. They didn't even play my walkout song. I don't want to talk bad about Bellator, but it just didn't seem like they were on the same page as me, or any of the females, as far as giving them any of the spotlight.

It's crazy because they pursued me. They wanted me to fight for them bad, to the point where they gave me a lot of money to fight for them. Why are you going to do that, and then not promote or market your product? I just don't understand their reasoning behind that at all. I couldn't even get a retweet from them [laughs].

SD: You said at one point in this interview that you're not a nurturer. Do you ever have plans for children?

FH: I hate to say definitively yes or no and have that set in stone. Right now, at this point in my life, I don't foresee it. I'm very selfish with my time, and right now, I kind of have to be. My career is the most important thing to me, and I don't want to have to take a year off to have a child.

Also, I don't have a boyfriend and I'm not married, so that factors in, too. If my status changes, that my factor in to a shift in priorities. I'm an all or nothing type of person. Right now, it's all about my career, but I could easily see myself shifting that all or nothing attitude to a child, and being the best parent I could be. If I ever end up having a child, it would be my number one focus.

Met Felice and hung out a tiny bit one XFO weekend, very cool girl. Down to earth, and seems as focused as they come.

I hope the best for her and could easily see her emerge into quite the marketable star.

This. No one really wants to admit it, but looks do play a part into the marketing of WMMA. The 115lb division is filled with attractive fighters who can fight. Looks aren't everything, the girls got to fight, but it sure helps to have both. Not trying to big up mysognou, but it is simply one of the factors that play into wmma.

This lil' chickie is gonna be a star in the UFC some day. When Zuffa gets the women's 115lbs division on its feet fighters like her are gonna be in demand. I expect to see her in the UFC soon.
