UFC introduces women's straw-weight division; TUF 20 to determine champ

There was a point in time that Dana White said that women will never fight in the UFC. Fast forward to 2013 and the UFC now has a women's champion and today introduced another new division, which will also be featured on TUF:

The Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced today that the Invicta FC women’s mixed martial arts organization has assigned the contracts of 11 women’s strawweight (115 pounds) competitors to the UFC. Terms of the assignment were not disclosed.

The 11 fighters are: Carla Esparza, Claudia Gadelha, Felice Herrig, Joanne Calderwood, Tecia Torres, Rose Namajunas, Bec Hyatt, Emily Kagan, Alex Chambers, Julianna Lima, and Paige Van Zant.

In May, these 11 competitors will report to Las Vegas and participate on season 20 of The Ultimate Fighter® in the first-ever all-women’s edition of the show. And for the first time ever, The Ultimate Fighter® will crown a UFC champion, as the winner of season 20 will become the inaugural UFC women’s strawweight champion.

Hopefully there are no weight issues this season. I'd hate to see a Cody Bollinger situation play out again... with one of the best fighters missing weight and getting torn a new one by Dana White. Or what happened to Peggy Morgan. She basically slept the whole time because she was tired from starving herself for weeks.

Joanne will go into the house at 120-122 poundsShe's been through a 7 week spell before making weight for 2 Muay Thai fights at 115 pounds and a no gi submission grappling competition at 120 pounds. Weigh cut will be a factor for some of the other girls more than her.

Felice and Carla will come off looking like rousey. Bec Hyatt will steal the show. Rose will be killing bitches but in the end it will be Claudia and Tecia for the belt with Claudia winning. She is an animal <img src="/images/phone/apple.png" alt="Phone Post 3.0" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/></blockquote><br />Not true. There are still good strawweights out there for Invicta...<br /><br />Ayaka Hamasaki 9-1<br />Katja Kankaanpaa 8-1-1 <br />Mizuki Inoue 7-1<br />Herica Tiburcio 7-2<br />Kinberly Novaes 7-2<br />Alida Gray 4-0<br />Karolina Kowalkiewicz 4-0<br />Amber Stautzenberger 4-1<br />Stephanie Eggink 4-1</blockquote><br />The problem is when those women get bigger and better they will be going to zuffa also.</blockquote><br />The UFC will never have a monopoly on any of the weight classes. Look at the women signed to the 135 division. You have legit 135ers like Smith, Baszler, D'Alelio, Holm, Nakamoto, Murphy, Moras, Pennington, etc. who were not signed right away. You also have about a third of the bantamweight roster consisting of natural flyweights. Almost all of these women will be cut within a year after they served their purpose. So Eye, Andrade, Albu, Sexton, Correia, Modaferri, and Gaff will all probably go to Invicta in the near future and beef up their Flyweight division. I can also see some vets and TUF losers leaving after the UFC churns the roster over looking for new talent.</blockquote><br />Never said the word monopoly. It hurts invicta by taking away its highest profile and most profitable fights.</blockquote>Ya but invicta seems to have no prob with being a feeder league for the ufc. Plus I'm sure they will get publicity from this. <img src="/images/phone/droid.png" alt="Phone Post 3.0" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/></blockquote><br />"I’ll never look at us as a feeder." - shannon knapp.</blockquote><br /> ya she just said that i posted this before the article and if you read the article she really just does not looking at it like a feeder but she said its like shes sending her kids to college. imo thats a feeder i never said they wanted to be entirely just a feeder but knapp is not fighting the ufc she knows they are the bigger org and it would be stupid to try and compete it would just hurt invicta and her fighters.

I think girls like Juliana Lima and Alex Chambers will end up in the finals. They don't have to cut crazy weight and will be strong for every fight and both are super tough and well rounded. Carla,Bec,Joanne and Claudia are all going to have weight issues. It will be very hard for them to cut to 115lbs several times in a short amount of time.

I don't see Bec getting by any of Esparza, Torres, Gadelha, or Calderwood. I'd rate her as no better than 50-50 to get by Lima, Herrig, or Thug. If they wind up using one of those last five slots on someone like Aguilar, Hamasaki, or Inoue, her odds only get longer. I like Bec, but the odds of her winning TUF are pretty damn slim.

Am I the only one hoping they have giant heavyweight coaches that dwarf them?
