Pettis: 'Of course I want' Aldo title fight

The UFC lightweight division is in a state of confusion. Champion Anthony Pettis is recovering from a knee injury, and hopes to return by July. The #1 contender status a muddle:
•Henderson was insufficiently impressive at UFC on FOX 10;
•Thomson lost;
•T.J. Grant is still out as a recovers from a freak concussion suffered during grappling practice;
•Gilbert Melendez lost a title shot last year and has only a single win since, albeit a thrilling one over Diego Sanchez;
•Donald Cerrone was taken out in under three minutes by Pettis last year;
•Khabib Nurmagomedov does not yet have a win over a top 10 opponent; and,
•Nate Diaz is 1-2 his last three fights, with losses to both Thomson and Henderson.

Thinking outside the box, it looks like the next challenger for Pettis' title will be featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Aldo will relinquish his current title in order to move up to lightweight, but if he loses, can get back into the mix and fight his way back to it.

The plan works for Pettis.

“Of course I want that fight,” said Pettis to USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“Who else is there?” Pettis said. “Benson Henderson just beat Thomson, who was supposed to be the top contender. Gilbert Melendez already had his title shot. Why not him?”

With Aldo's move up, top contenders Cub Swanson and Chad Mendes may fight for the title.

“Obviously I wanted to be the one to dethrone Aldo,” Swanson said. “It would have been huge for my career and a feeling of redemption. I do think it makes sense for Aldo to move up because as fighters we always want to challenge ourselves.”

“I can’t say what the UFC will do with our division,” Swanson said. “I just hope I’m fighting someone for the title next.”

I'd easily pay to watch this.The tension between them is exactly what we need for an entertaining fight.High probability of a finish instead of a decision.

Seriously, he has to be delusional to really believe he earned a threematch with one fight. Let alone an extremely close fight, that a lot of people contested. It not like a typical - champion loses their belt, then gets right back in there - scenario. He got finished in the first round, and has now lost to pettis twice. Most fighters never get another shot at somebody they're 0-2 against, and definitely not after one fight, especially that fight. I guess it's so weird because Benson has always come off as a realistic person, to me.

And aldo is a quiet a challenge no matter where your coming from...Fight is fireworks. Striker vs striker both are deadly with kicks I would literally die in anticipation leading up to the fight. But it's not the smartest move marketing wise because someone's got to lose and Aldo certainly has more to lose when considering his win streak...

I think that's the only real difference is that Pettis was willing to move all the way down to fight aldo. Andy probably quiet couldn't make 170... Also people really wanted to see silva vs JBJ after that fight was mentioned. So they always have him a hard time for wanting to move down instead of up... But Pettis has it lucky because no ones been calling for a super fight At the weight class above his.

Do you know your UFC?The following statement is the reason why I ask:"Aldo is about to fight when all of a sudden Pettis pulls out. His reason? He needs more time to work on his somersault backflip twisting reverse superman off the cage falcon punch."Pettis is perfecting that move for the next potential superfight against Ronda Rousey.....under the right conditions of course.

Dana steals the FW belt the minute Aldo moves up. He then gives it to Faber and they share an epic bro hug.Aldo is about to fight when all of a sudden Pettis pulls out. His reason? He needs more time to work on his somersault backflip twisting reverse superman off the cage falcon punch.Aldo is declared the LW champion by just showing up. Benson arrives and gets in his good graces by showing him how to toothpick. Mesmerized by his smoothness, Aldo hands him the belt.This immediately triggers a glitch and Aldo gets sent to Limboweight at 150 pounds. Beltless and Baffled, he awaits. The only way to get out of Limbo is if someone challenges and actually fights him. Until then, he will wait.What does he do in the meantime? He kicks the crap out of the car that tried to take his life.

So if Aldo vacates the belt to fight Pettis... What happens when Pettis gets hurt and pulls out of the fight for another year? Does he automatically get the 45 again or is he shafted, and have to wait for the winner and then fight them?
