The origins of the UFC lie directly in the Gracie Academy in Torrance, CA. In an effort to promote his family's martial art, Rorion Gracie opened up the doors on Sunday, and let anyone come fight his students, with no rules.
In martial arts for a generation or more, most instructors told their student that Taekwondo/White Eyebrow Kung Fu/ThroPunKi/Ameridote was the most effective martial art. But no one ever actually tried it.
A student at the Gracie Academy, Art Davie, thought the challenges would make compelling viewing, and put together two video tapes of some of the matches. When the Gracie in Action tapes proved to be successful, they took the concept live, and called in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Now Rorion's sons Rener and Ryron have gone back into the vault, and released ten fights from the early 90s, featuring Lowell Anderson, Mark Baumeister, Joe Pardo, Fabio Santos, and Mauricio Zingano (RIP).
