Mousasi: Machida 'was always a step ahead'

On Saturday former Strikeforce and Dream light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi dropped down to middleweight vs. former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Mousasi lost in the Fight of the Night.

Afterwards, he didn't say he had the flu, or an injury to his boo boo. He could have cited ring rust, as he hadn't fought since beating Ilir Latifi last April.

"Rhythm always helps, but I felt good in the fight," said Mousasi at the post-fight press conference as transcribed by MMAFighting. "I don’t think so."

Instead, Mousasi gave the sport a lesson in how to talk about defeat - he was honest.

"He was always a step ahead," said Gegard. "I just couldn’t get started."

"I don’t know about the scoring. Maybe I had one round, maybe two..."

Mousasi lost the fight, but he won the Fight of the Night award, and he doubtless won even more fans for his integrity during the fight, and after it.

Funny people mention kissing because he's not a terrible striker. Power doesn't determine striking ability. I know it would t happen but videoing should enlist at machidas home gym. He'd come out an exceedingly good fighter IMHO

I respect Mousasi. Mousasi just needs to stop being so lax in his fighting style. He has all the talent, but I said it before in an old thread, he fights too "lazy". That was my main reasoning for why Machida would beat him. I don't know how else to describe it. He fights like it doesn't matter, like he lacks motivation. Respect for being a great fighter though, and being man enough to own up to a loss without excuses. Hope he makes it back to the top.

Was about to post the same thing. His one fight was a lopsided loss, that's hardly makes someone top 5.

So far he's 0-1 in a real MW division, not sure how that makes him top 5.

That's the scary part, he's only 28! I like Mousasi and the fact he didn't come up with a bag of excuses makes me like him more. You could tell right after the fight ended that he knew he lost but he handled it well. He is definitely top 5 and I think will be champ one day. He's just hitting his prime and will get even better.

Very classy guy. Also impressed with that head kick he took too.
