Thomson: I am sick over Pettis vs. Gil

The main event at UFC on FOX 10 on January 25 ended in a controversial Split Decision for Benson Henderson. Josh Thomson, 35, got a broken hand, his show money, and lost the title shot he had earned vs. Anthony Pettis.

“This might be it, man,” said Thomson at the post-fight press conference, as transcribed by MMAWeekly. “You train this hard for this long. I just see my title shots [expletive] disappearing.”

“I've had this all in my head. A 15-, 16-week camp will do that to you. I'm no spring chicken, so you start thinking about it. Two practices a day for six days a week, 16 weeks; that's an NFL season. I get hit more than guys in the NFL and they get paid way more.

“Everybody needs to know [when] their time has come. Maybe it's not mine right now, but I also don't want to be that person that fights not knowing when it's time to quit.”

“Realistically, I'm just going to go home, have a talk with my family and talk with my coaches, and I'm probably going to sit down with Dana and see which direction we want to go. That's really what it comes down to is just getting the whole team together, seeing what the plans are for me.”

Thomson appeared recently on MMAJunkie Radio, and has had a change of heart, following the announcement that Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis would be opposing coaches on TUF 20, with a title shot at the finale.

Thomson thinks it should have been him, not Melendez.

“It made me kind of sick to my stomach,” said Thomson. “I think it’s a good chance I’ll be back.”

“I’m not concerned about legacy. What it is is that I know it’s right there within my reach of grabbing it, and that guys that I know I can beat and should have beaten are already getting those shots, and not just once, but twice.”

“Hopefully, there’s a chance to welcome Jose Aldo to the lightweight division, and we’ll make a case from there. We’ll see what happens.”

“No one wants to end on the downhill like a Muhammed Ali, or you’re in that state where it’s time to just give it up. I can’t say I’m trying to walk away while I’m still good, but just knowing guys like Gilbert, who I feel like I beat in my third fight, and guys like Benson, who beat Gil in a very close split decision – I feel like I won more than Gilbert lost to Benson. I should be right there. I am right there. I’m getting heated up right now just talking about it.”

“I’m happy for Gil that he got a good contract; I’m happy that Gil still is with the UFC. It just gives me one more person to get through to get to the title. I’m just sick to my stomach that it should have been me there. [Melendez] got two title shots in the amount of time that I should have gotten one.

“I’m just a little upset, that’s all. It just gets me remotivated and focused on what needs to happen.”

Whether he's right or wrong to complain; the main factI take from this is that he's not retiring. Which is good news.

He's coming off a loss, can't really be disgusted about the matchmaking. However, it is bullshit that they're doing a TUF, too many contenders at LW to put the title on the shelf that long, especially with Pettis having been on injury layoff for a while.

Part of it is that Thompson is very injury prone. I feel like he gets injured in all his fights.

Yeah, he just needs to realize that he's losing these fights not because he is a lesser fighter, but because he is just too low output. I think most would agree that he seemed to be the superior fighter to both Bendo and Gil, but he just wasn't active enough to be given the rounds he needed.

Whilst I like Josh, he can't complain about not getting a title shot based off a win over a patchy Nate Diaz and a close decision loss to the ex champ!Get a W over a top contender and come back

He can not complain of not getting a shot after coming of a loss? If he had one then we would probably be seeing him in tuf but he didn't
