Hendricks: Diaz doesn't deserve title shot, but I'd fight him

Johny Hendricks will fight next weekend to determine a new welterweight champion. The winner will likely face the winner of the Condit vs. Woodley bout on the same card, but last week Nick Diaz said he would be open to a UFC return...for a title shot.

Although Hendricks believes it will be Condit or Woodley who's next in line, should he earn the title, he'll fight whomever the UFC asks.

“If I win this fight, it’s going to be between one of them two,” he today told MMAjunkie.

“Carlos is always a tough opponent; same thing with Woodley,” Hendricks said. “Those two, they’re fighting the same night. But a fight’s a fight. You never know what’s going to happen. You just have to say whoever wants to come after you, let them come at you, and you move forward from that.”

Asked whether he would fight Diaz in his first defense of the welterweight belt, Hendricks initially joked, “What do they say, no comment?”

Then, he added: “Realistically, I think he needs to fight a couple of times. What is he, 0-2 in his last few fights? It is what it is, but if the UFC said, ‘Hey Johny, you’ve got to fight him,’ well guess what? I’m not going to say no.”

We need random testing to get the juicers outta this game. That and mandatory shaving of excessive beards design to coverup small faces and make the guy look manly. That and stupid bug eye stares that distract opponents, get rid of that. Ok, that's 3 things I want.

well I agree they definitely would have been worse in 5 rounders, and as far as the rankings go I'm just going by fightmatrix rankings so he's got some crazy formula and that's the way it shakes out. strength of competition put him in the #5 spot at the time.as far as Nicks rank he's "retired" no ranking of him currently.

You may be right, and I'd love to see him come back. He's awesome to watch fight and I had the pleasure of being at Diaz/BJ and Diaz/Condit live. However, I don't know what gives him this crazy idea that he's above fighting anyone in the UFC other than the champ. If he keeps up that mindset, he'll never fight again. He could realistically be in a #1 contenders match now if he wouldn't have turned down Condit. Pretty soon he'll need to win 2, and then 3. He's just fucking himself over.

Just because the UFC told you BJ was ranked #5 doesn't make it true. BJ's been one of my favorite fighters forever and has probably been the #1 or #2 LW in the world for the last 12 years, but not at 170.Think about this dude. In the last decade, that's 10 years (YES 10 YEARS), BJ's only win at 170 was an unranked Matt Hughes. He benefited from 3 round fights and got a draw with Fitch and fought GSP to a close fight. In 5 rounders, the fights against Fitch, GSP 1, Rory, and Diaz would have looked much, much worse.

I hear you, and I agree, GSP won, but the choice to award him the vacant title shot with RL made sense on his end. RL was on a roll and this is his reward for being an old-school guy who is always entertaining and a beast. The matchup is epic. But the whole ripping on Condit for the Diaz fight, who is the most badass WW in my eyes, is crazy. He used a strategy that Nick had no chance at winning, and exposed his game. I mean, it's not up to the fighter to go in there and do what the other guy want so that he can win, it is up to the guy losing the fight to cut him off, and do something. People forget, I think Nick coasted a lot in that fight too. And in the end, both guys got a shot at Georges.Dude, I love Nick Diaz and miss him in there, but I am a rational person and he needs two wins against top 5 guys to justify it. To me, if this was a fair sport, that would be the choice.I want MMA to get to a point where the only thing that gets you a shot at the belt is results.
