White: Barao 'in process' of becoming a star

Renan Barao is an impressive 28-1, winning his last 28 fights, and is the undisputed UFC bantamweight champion. However, the Brazilian fighter is not well-known yet and not a drawing star for the UFC, but they could change as he continues to win:

"It's always going to be tough and Barao's in this spot. Listen, who's been beating the Barao drum more than me? I think this kid, he's not there yet. He's the champion, but not the big star yet.

"Who says more positive things about Barao than me?," White asked the media in attendance. "Guy's been winning fights for nine years and hasn't lost, he's on this incredible win streak, he finishes guys. He comes in, he's a fun fighter to watch, exciting. I don't disagree. I don't disagree. You have to be able to deliver the numbers and we're in the process now of building Barao into the star that I think he should be."

"People need to do something it differentiate themselves from everyone else."He is the champ. If that doesnt differentiate oneself from the "pack" then one should question the value of the belt. You mention phil davis as someone barao should be working to be like... Phil davis. Think about that for a second.

Barao needs to learn how to play the fight game which is more than just fighting. You need to be a self promoter and use every chance you get to sell yourself to the public. The market is flooded with good to great fighters. People need to do something it differentiate themselves from everyone else. And I'm not saying you need to be Chael, but at least someone like Phil Davis is trying to work his way into something like that.It isn't as if GSP was a big talker, but he did endear himself to the masses with things like the "I was not impressed by your performance" promo or getting on his knees and begging for the title shot.

Slap yourself? UFC has a 160 million dollar TV deal in Brazil, which events regularly get over 10 and 15 million viewers. This is a global business son, and TV deals = dollars. Barao is making the UFC a lot more fucking money than Faber, but idiots like you are programmed to think PPV sales are the end all to sports making money, get with it, no major sport is on a PPV model.

It is based mostly, on drawing power. It has to be.

It's a fighters job to fight. Promoters job to promote. If one OR MORE of your champs aren's stars, you've failed your job as a promoters. Thread title should be White admits to sucking as a promoter.

it's amazing seeing people agreeing with Uncle Dana and making excuses with why this guy's not a star...-Barao lost once, in 2005.-he finished his last 3 fights.-he won the title, and defended it successfully 3 times.-he's ranked #3 as the top pound for pound fighter on the UFC's own rankings.he is doing what he needs to do. Dana needs to quit acting like he's the star and promote this guy, since it's like his job... Anderson spoke very little English, and it didn't stop him from being a star.

He needs to take a shower, hit the weights and get a clue. Oh and speak English. After all that he has a shot at being a star.
