Penn: Edgar only reason I'm at 145

BJ Penn has fought as high as light heavyweight and is a former welterweight and lightweight champion. But this July Penn will fight at the lowest weight of his career when he meets Frankie Edgar at featherweight, and a fight with Edgar is the only reason he's moved down to a new weight class:

Make no mistake about it: B.J. Penn, a former welterweight and lightweight champion, wouldn't be cutting down to 145 pounds at age 35 if it wasn't for one final crack at Frankie Edgar, the man who took his lightweight title.

"If Dana had asked me to come to 145, and fight any other people, there's no way I would have done it," said Penn, who meets Edgar for the third time on July 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in The Ultimate Fighter's coaches fight.

You can knock a guy down four times and he can get up. But you only need to choke a guy out one time.

Here's the difference....You can hit Franky with a 2x4 and then shoot him in the leg, he will jab n jog you till death.Gray Ko'd him 4x in that fight, and Franky never quit.I can't stand Franky, but the dude is one of those guys who can go 12 rounds easilyAdd in a coaching staff that yells"YOU GOT TO KEEP SCORING POINTS"dude is still a boss, i'm just not a fanBJ's cardio will get tested again obviously and that will be the true comparison come later roundsWill be interesting to watch for sure

I have nothing against Edgar, but there's no way in hell he did enough in the first fight to take the title. No way. That was a complete robbery. So as far as I'm concerned, they are 1 and 1.That said, Edgar is young and talented and trains with a tremendous team. He is only getting better. The 3rd fight will be incredible regardless of outcome.

That's too bad. It seems like it should've been his weight class a long time ago.  It makes way more sense than WW.

Win or lose, hopefully BJ sticks around at 145. There are lots of great fights for him there. Penn vs McGregor would be a fucking classic!

Frankie agreed to take the 3rd fight no questions asked. I think Frankie knows he has his number.A lot of people think if the "prepared" BJ shows up he can beat Frankie but Frankie is just too much for BJ.. he outhustled him in both fights and he will do the same in the 3rd fight. He won't ko him or sub him but he will win the decision.
