Rankings Update: Lots of featherweight changes

by Chris Palmquist |

After each event, the UFC polls various members of the media to update its Rankings in each weight division as well as the pound for pound rankings.

This past weekend the UFC held two events back to back, but really the only division that saw a lot of movement was the featherweights.

Champion : Jose Aldo
1     Chad Mendes
2     Cub Swanson +2
3     Frankie Edgar -1
4     Ricardo Lamas -1
5     Chan Sung Jung
6     Dustin Poirier
7     Nik Lentz +2
8     Clay Guida -1
9     Dennis Siver -1
10     Jeremy Stephens +1
11     Dennis Bermudez -1
12     Conor McGregor +2
12     Darren Elkins
14     Charles Oliveira *NR
15     Tatsuya Kawajiri -1

Of particular note is that with his win over Jeremy Stephens, Cub Swanson secured his place in line for a featherweight title shot. Number one contender Chad Mendes will fight Jose Aldo later this year and Swanson should be in line for the winner. Despite a losing effort, Stephens moved up one spot and cracked the top ten.

Kawajiri at #15 is an absolute travesty. He did lose to Guida (who also beat SHOWTIME unanimously) but it was a close bout with a lot of high points for Kawajiri in each round with Guida edging the rounds out. Crusher still threatens to be in the top 5.

Came to say this, I'm partial as I know Dennis and trained with him some in Harrisburg, but how can you be on a streak like that and be ranked like that? I think he is one of the most fun to watch in the division

Edgar lost to the champ. Ie someone ranked above him- why would you go down after losing a fight you're predicted to lose.Stephenson lost to a guy nearly ten places ahead of him. And made it a fairly close fight. That indicates he's not ten places worse than him.I think the rankings are utter crap and unnecessary- that said, you're logic is off.

Can I just mention how much I dislike the usage of the numbers themselves? Champ should be 1, the number one contender should be 2, and so on. Mendes should be ranked number 2, Cub should be number 3...

Kinda weird that Oliviera is ranked at #14 but already beat #13 Darren Elkins and (if not for an illegal knee during an offensegasm) defeated #6 Nik Lentz.

Connors's injurious words beatdown Cole in his training camp, well deserved bump in ratings.

Yes, but which of them is the pound for pound best fighter on the planet right now.   That's the real question.

Connor deserves the +2 bump from his smack talk of Cole Miller alone.
