Jones vs. Gustafsson II to be in Vegas at UFC 178

by Kirik Jenness |

The UFC wanted UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones to rematch Alexander Gustafsson, perhaps in Sweden. Jones wanted to fight Daniel Cormier instead. Eventually Jones agreed to fight "The Mauler" but was adamant about one thing, it was not going to be in Sweden.

Now the UFC has announced that the fight will be in Vegas, at UFC 178 on Sept. 27. The arena has not been announced, but will likely be either the MGM Grand or Mandalay Bay.

The pair fought at UFC 165 in September, with Jones taking a controversial decision. Each has had one fight since. Jones soundly beat Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 in April, while Gustafsson knocked out Jimi Manuwa in the second at UFN 37 in March.

No other bouts for the card have been announced.

Wonder where they are going to host it. On the 27th, Kings of Leon are playing the MGM Grand and at Mandalay Bay there's a car auction.

So does the UFC realize that Toronto is as close to a home fight as Jon Jones is going to get? I'm far from a Jones honk, but to be the man, you gotta beat the man. Make Gus fight him in Toronto.

Jones should hire Tonya Harding to kneecap Gustafsson before the fight, because that's the only way he's going to win.

You can get a refund for the Toronto show if you already purchased tickets, so I've heard.. Sad that ZUFFA "sold out" the Canadian fans once again..

I don't believe that they ever considered holding the fight in Sweden.

Yet they were willing to take a loss to help build a market. What does Jones get out of a fight in Sweeden?

The UFC make a lot more money from PPV than any of their fighters.
