Marshall and Gugerty released by the UFC

The UFC has reportedly released light-heavyweight Eliot Marshall and lightweight Shannon Gugerty from their contracts following losses at Sunday's UFC on Versus 1 event.

Marshall's UFC release is very surprising as the promotion tends to release fighters after losing back-to-back fights. Marshall suffered his first UFC loss at Sunday's event after previously winning three bouts with the promotion. Marshall would be a relevant pick-up for any promotion, even more so for the San Jose-based Strikeforce promotion, whose light-heavyweight division is still developing.

I was there in Montreal for the Vinny fight. First fight of the night and was painfully boring.

For everyone questioning this, try sitting through the Eliot/Vinny and Eliot/Brilz fights. They were arguably the worst two fights in the UFC in 2009. The most frustrating part was (particularly the Vinny fight) Eliot looked like he was winning comfortably, but could've finished had he attacked more. Of course that would've left him a little more open and he didn't want to take that risk, seemingly.

^^ThisNot bashing either guy, but the fight was brutal. No action at all. The crowd hated it and I think Dana White was unhappy with both of their "performances".

The TUF winners get "6-figure contracts". I believe anyone else is offered a standard deal. Many get multiple fight deals that the UFC can break if they don't "perform well".If a fighter has a 4 fight deal, and loses the 1st two...they can "cut" him.If a fighter has a 4 fight deal, and he wins all 4...they could still choose NOT to renew/extend his contract.

i think Gugerty's release was normal because he lost two straight, and the UFC usually cuts guys on losing streaks

If you're not in top contention, you'll get cut if your fights are boring. Dana doesn't want this to go the way of boxing. If Marshall wins a couple exciting fights for someone else, Dana will bring him back.

gugerty lost to etim, fisher, and guida and had two wins. that one seemed strange too.
