Howard blasts stoppage

Losing for the first time in the UFC was frustrating enough, but John Howard is more upset about how his fight ended last Sunday against Jake Ellenberger.

The ringside doctor stopped the fight 2:21 into the third round because of extensive swelling around Howard’s left eye. Howard concedes that Ellenberger was controlling the fight, but the Dorchester native wanted the chance to knock Ellenberger out in the final two-plus minutes.

“It looked worse, but it wasn’t bad,” Howard said of his eye. “Trust me, I could have kept going. I did not want to stop. With two minutes left in the third round, let me fall on my shield at least. If I’m going to lose, I’m going to lose on my shield. Don’t stop the fight like that. That’s a horrible way to lose.”

The swelling began after Ellenberger landed a number of elbows to Howard’s face in the second round. The doctor checked on Howard (14-5) between the second and third rounds and allowed the fight to continue.

The third round began much like the first two, with Ellenberger taking Howard to the ground. After Ellenberger (23-5) failed to do much, referee Herb Dean stepped in and stood the fighters up.

Dean then called in the doctor to take another look at Howard, whose eye was nearly swollen shut.

“The doctor didn’t even ask me a question,” said Howard, who had won his first four UFC fights. “He just looked and was like, ‘Oh, I think it’s broken. We’re stopping it.’ I was like, ‘No, no, no.’ I was shaking my head and he stopped the fight.”

Despite the appearance, Howard said he didn’t break any bones. He’ll have to serve a mandatory medical fighting suspension of 30-45 days, bu the was back training last week.

The swelling went down considerably in a matter of days. Some might have found it grotesque, but Howard was unfazed.

“I’ve been beat up before so it’s not a big deal,” Howard said. “Getting beat up, I don’t care about that. I come from a place where I used to get beat up every other day so I’m used it. I just get paid for it now.”

Our main man Joe Lauzon had some good things to say in Sunday's UFC notebook as well “I’m there now, which is awesome,” Lauzon said. “When I started this camp three months out, I was in better shape on Day 1 than I was on the final day of my last training camp. Everything is better - my punches are better, my boxing is better, my jiu-jitsu is sharper. Every single aspect of my game three months ago was better than when I fought Sam Stout.”

This I agree with 100%. The doctors job is to look after your health. If you give him any reason or doubts, it's his job to look after you and that usually means stopping the fight. In my Bisping fight my vision was fucked up, everything was out of focus and at times seeing double. I told the Doc I was fine, get everything of my face. When I stood up to start the round Mazagatti asked me if I wanted him to stop the fight... I told both of them (at the time not only was everything blurry but there were two of them) "no way, I was having way too much fun!". Elvis

The only BS in that fight was how many times it was stood up.  Ellenberger was keeping busy with BRUTAL GnP and Dean kept standing it up...  The better fighter won that night

Exactly. I was reading this article thinking, "Isn't this the same guy who told the ref he couldn't see??" Obviously it will be stopped when a fighter says that. He's just unnecessarily trying to save face at this point

Howard put up little to no protest when the ref called it.  He had the look of "oh well, it's over". It was a cool fight until then, he was going to lose anyway.  The doctor saved him 2 minutes of punishment and possible permanent eye damage.

It can NOT be left up to the fighter. Pride is too powerful. The doctor did him a favor--now he can say he could have continued and it should not have been stopped.

If that happens it will only hurt him. This is what I'm saying. He's an adult. Can't he make his own decision. I'm trying to be a Devil's advocate. Is it about pride? Don't see how a doctor would have a vested interest in Zuffa, but could it be protecting a product? Just saying, if a guy wants to make a choice to continue or not shouldn't it be his? If he gets permanently injure he'll be an idiot, if he continues on and gets the KO and doesn't get injured he gets a bigger, better payday and a career boost. So does it comedown to which "What if?" question you are asking?
