Jorgensen likely for next title shot at Cruz

by John Morgan | source:

Had it not been for Joseph Benavidez's stunning finishes of Rani Yahya and Miguel Torres, WEC bantamweight contender Scott Jorgensen (11-3 MMA, 7-2 WEC) may have already had his title shot.

But following Jorgensen's "Fight of the Night" win over Brad Pickett at Wednesday's WEC 50 event in Las Vegas, even the notoriously fence-riding General Manager of the WEC, Reed Harris, had to admit "Young Guns" was a pretty clear-cut option for champion Dominick Cruz's next bout.

"I can't (see a reason not to give Jorgensen a shot)," Harris told

Of course, Harris immediately followed that up with his usual disclaimer.

"Ultimately Sean Shelby makes that decision," Harris said. "He's our matchmaker. We'll sit down next week. He'll tell me what he thinks, but I'll tell you what, Scotty looked very, very impressive."

We need a GIF of Pickett putting that mouthpiece back in while going backwards and getting clocked in the face!

I'm in agreement w/most....Pickett had the 1st round, but Jorgenson took the next two...Just an awesome fight though.

I'd say both Hardy and Bisping are A- fighters. Quality fighters barely making the top 10 at best who will never own the belt, but will beat most the fighters in their division. Also, Hathaway while I don't predict ever being anything of a champion has yet to be topped in the UFC and until he loses has top A-list potential.

I had Jorgensen, 29-28, but it was an excellent, exciting fight - Pickett is the only "A" level British MMA fighter right now.

i could see the first round going either way. i would have said pickett, but it wasn't like a douglas crosby / cecil peeholes call by calling it 30/27.

Jorgensen is going to destroy who ever wins the main event tonight. The dude is a workhorse and a machine. He's a grinder that won't go away.
