Palhares: 'It's not that I want to hurt anyone'

Criticism of the Brazilian Top Team fighter Rousimar Palhares was rife after his heel hook win over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111 in March this year. He was accused of holding the submission for too long after Drwal tapped, causing damage to the Polish middleweight’s knee.

“Murilo always told me to wait until the referee stops the fight. He had problems with [fake taps] in the past and Anderson almost had the same problem in his last fight,” Palhares said.

“It's not that I want to hurt anyone but I am trying to be fast with my submissions so the referee needs to be fast as well, to stop the fight. My opinion is that the referee in my last fight was too far away and took too long to stop the fight. If he had been closer then he could have stopped it right away and then we would not even be having this conversation at all!”

You can almost believe Palhares, but then you watch his fight with Helio Dipp.Palhares choked Dipp out, and then kept choking him as the ref tried to tug his arms off of Dipp's neck. The ref touches him and tells him to break, pulls on his arm, slaps on his arm with both hands, and then finally grabs Palhares arm and tugs very hard, and only then does Palhares let go.

If you ask me, he's got a chip on his shoulder because of his size (see Manny Gamburyan). Why doesn't he just go down to 155 and chill out?

im not saying its not a dick move to hold the heel hook.but its a fight for money, so the situation is different. the dude is hungry, that submission was his chance to win, and at the UFC level its hard to get a finish. so he went after it hard and went a little overboard. if a well known pro agreen, i would ask why he is willing to give up the win for no reason.and there is nobody who would quit fighting or release a submission hold to call foul. that is ridiculous. if the ref didn't see a tap, he's not going to stop shit to check.as for replayplease name a single occurrence where any athletic commission used replay to determine a tap or change the outcome of a fight in the UFC

Guys, if you go to a fighters meeting, at any show, anywhere, the ref is going to tell you (as a fighter) to end the fight. He will tell everyone there to continue fighting until instructed by him to stop, and that if they let go to a person tapping, and he doesnt see the tap, the fight will not end. Do I think he probably cranked the hell out of that leg? Yes, do I think he was in the wrong? No, he did just as every ref I have ever heard give a speech about ending a fight instructs.

by the way, is "do you compete?" what you would say to a well known pro who agrees with me?

i have competed quite a bit. striking, grappling and mma. my name would be green if i gave a fuck enough about what people like you think to take the time to have it changed. i dont think that people dont cheat. if someone taps when you are submitting them you get the fuck up and tell the ref to watch the replay. we are talking ufc. its very easy. the example you gave is of someone who acted incorectly as you would have. they did so because they where in the middle of the fight... do you compete? we arent talking about 'tap or snap' either douch. we are talking 'tap all you want, its snaping if i am not overpowered by the ref in time, even if you are'...... forget it. you could be a 12 yo who thinks forest griffin is second only to tito ortiz. im wasting time

Paul Harris is the man! The RNC transition into armbar was probably one of the best submissions in the history if mma. Fuck the haters. He was just protecting himself from his opponent pulling a Lindland or Sonnen on him.

Warhand 1 day ago If the fucking ref needs to pry your arms off your opponent's extremity after your opponent is frantically tapping your arm and your leg you're holding the submission for to long ASSHOLE!
