Aurelio injured, replaced by Gugerty in Shine Fights

As anyone involved in the sport of mixed martial arts can tell you, injuries can happen at anytime. UFC/PRIDE veteran Marcus “Maximus” Aurelio is no exception to that concept. After sustaining an injury while training for this weekend’s Shine Fights Lightweight Grand Prix, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master has been forced to vacate his spot in the tourney. Taking his place will be fellow submission specialist Shannon Gugerty.

A UFC veteran in his own right, Gugerty is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under famed grappler Dean Lister. He began his professional MMA career successfully with a submission victory over current WEC mainstay Cub Swanson. After amassing a 10-2 record, he was invited to compete for the Ultimate Fighting Championships, where he has fought five times. During his time with the UFC, Gugerty was able to rack up wins over Dale Hartt and Matt Grice. The 28 year-old San Diego native trains at Victory MMA with fellow notables Jeremy Stephens, Court McGee, Toby Imada, Peter Sobotta, Joe Brammer, and Tomas Drwal.

Jason Chamber, Shine Fight COO stated, “I am sad to see Marcus pull out of the tournament and wish him a fast recovery. Stepping up to a challenge of this magnitude on 3 days notice is a very daunting task- it is a testament to what a warrior Shannon Gugerty is. We are excited to see him compete!"

LMAO at 'the doctor said it would be better in  couple of weeks' Perfect timing. The man has it figured out. Shine needs to let the DREAM fight happen for a few reasons. 1. Marcus will get a large forum to show his skillset and against a top 10 opponent. 2. If Marcus is undercontract with Shine, he will be bringing a bigger name to his next fight with them after fighting Aoki. 3. It would be hard for Shine to justify suing Marcus because Marcus would not only be suspended from earning a living if he fought for them but he may not get paid either. I can't see how the judge would side with a promoter who is bound to default and not pay it's fighters. Who is going to pay 30 bucks for that abortion?

Gotta love the attempted strongarm tactics ya got there, Jason. Weak sauce.

May be tough to get back in the UFC...he's not a huge draw, is 1-4 in the company (his 1 win was awesome though, crazy knockdown/flurry/spin into an armbar in a flash), and is 37.  He may be better off collecting checks headlining smaller cards or Japan.

I've been a fan of Aurelio for years, but it's only fair to clarify that his fight with Guida should have been a one-sided Unanimous Decision loss (Adalaide Byrd judging fights = bad) and Dunham had him rocked pretty badly in their fight. Still, he's a quality lightweight and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he managed to beat Aoki should the fight still take place.

Me too, Aoki-Aurelio would be a great fight.  I never realized Aurelio has never been finished.  8 losses by decision, 3 of them split decisions.  UFC losses to Clay Guida, Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca, and Evan Dunham...Dunham and Guida were SDs.  No shame in that.
