Independent U.S. Senate candidate Mike Spears faces an uphill battle to beat Sen. David Vitter on Election Day, so on Wednesday, Spears vowed to beat Vitter in a mixed-martial arts cage match.
Spears of Lafayette challenged Vitter to a three-round bout Oct. 16 at USA-MMA's "Return of the Champions" event at the Cajundome.
Like a prize fighter at a weigh-in, Spears taunted his opponent with jabs at his political record and personal foibles.
"You and other career politicians like yourself, hell-bent on ruining this nation, have blood on your hands," Spears said. "I think it's time you have blood on your face."
With MMA fighter and promoter Gil Guillory at his side, Spears billed the bout as an "epic battle between the American people and the out-of-control, tyrannical federal government."
He alluded to a 2007 scandal in which Vitter was linked to a Washington, D.C., prostitution ring.
"Senator Vitter's behavior — his admission to breaking the law in 2007 — has insulted the honor of Louisiana and the Louisiana Senate seat," Spears said.
"I'm in this race — I'm in this fight — to restore the honor of Louisiana and of the nation."
Spears took shots at Vitter's record in Congress as well. He criticized the Senator for not doing more to end a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
"Senator Vitter has proposed 95 bills in his six years in the Senate. Not one of those bills has passed," Spears said. "He's ineffective and he's done nothing for Louisiana."
Vitter did not immediately return calls seeking comment, but Spears said he has notified Vitter of the challenge. He doubted Vitter would accept, however.
"I hope he shows, but I think it's unlikely," Spears said. "He generally avoids things when there's no upside."
Spears said he would fight regardless, as Guillory said USA-MMA will provide a standby opponent in the event Vitter is absent.
Spears said he has no mixed martial arts experience, but plans to begin training this week.
Spears is co-founder of Firefly Digital, a website design and development company in Lafayette. He has no prior political experience.
