Should Cerrone and Varner complete the trilogy?

by Damon Martin | source: mmaweekly.com

Just seconds after the fight ended, Cerrone turned to Varner and gladly offered the former WEC lightweight champion a third fight, this time heading to his home state of Arizona.

"Jamie, you asked for a rematch in Arizona, I'd be much obliged to give that to you," Cerrone said after his win.

The Arizona event set to go down on Dec. 16 will be headlined by two title fights, including 155-pound champion Ben Henderson defending his belt against Anthony Pettis and bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz facing Scott Jorgensen in a 135-pound title showdown.

Adding Cerrone vs. Varner 3 to the card would be like throwing gasoline on an inferno. WEC General Manager Reed Harris admits that he'd love to see the two rivals go at it one more time.

"I'd have them fight every show," he commented after Thursday’s rematch. "The way these guys fight, I'm telling you that was an absolutely outstanding, exciting fight, and I'd love to see it again."

The reality is that Cowboy and Varner make for entertaining fights vs. almost any LW in the world, no need for a 3rd figh right now.

The Ufc Needs to send Joe Stevenson Clay Guida or Nate Diaz or Shawn Sherk to the WEC.

They're both going to be ready to fight on December 16 after that war they just had? If the fight's scheduled I'll definitely watch it but I agree with others here that I'd rather see it further down the road. I believe all these rematches are a testament to the lack of depth of the WEC's LW division but at the same time, I think the WEC has been doing the best they can with who they have. I'd like to see something done, possibly move the LW's up to the UFC once the 125 pound division is introduced in the WEC. It really is a shame to see the WEC with limited options because obviously the UFC LW division is absolutely stacked. Some might suggest that the UFC move some of that LW talent to the WEC but who would volunteer for less money and smaller bonuses? If I recall correctly, Nate Diaz recently picked up a nice $70,000 bonus while Cerrone and Varner received $10,000 each. I understand the reason behind the differences due to ppv revenue and I can see a couple WEC ppv's a year as a viable option but again, who's going to volunteer for less money and smaller bonuses? I expect that Zuffa would have to force most, if not all, current UFC fighters to move. I'd rather see the best LW's in the WEC merge with the UFC at some point.
