Paulo Thiago's camp hoping to not be cut

Despite winning the bonus prize for the best fight of UFC 121, the Brazilian Paulo Thiago, who was among the tops of the division until being beaten twice in a row, is now in a complicated situation.

“What saved me was the bonus for the best fight of the evening… I think that he’s got a chance of coming back”, affirmed Ataide Jr., coach of Paulo on Constrictor Team, in Brasilia, Brazil. “He did a great first round, but then he started to decrease his performance, and Diego started to improve."

“We’ll come back to Brasilia to get the team together, watch the fight again and to understand what happened… We can’t understand, Paulo is doing great on the trainings and can’t give it all during the fight. The game plan was not to go to the floor on the bottom and attack a lot while standing up, but we couldn’t do it”.

Thiago can’t focus exclusively on his MMA training however, since he has a daily routine as a cop in the Special Operations Squad (BOPE) of Brasilia. In Alaide’s opinion, however, Thiago didn’t have to leave BOPE to be successful on the show.

“We get a wonderful support from the police, but I think that (what’s lacking) the focus on the trainings, more dedication. In Brazil we suffer a lot because of the lack of sponsorship, but we have to fix his training load."

“If he UFC gives him another shot, it might be on an undercard fight. Since he joined he’s only fought really tough guys, but I think they’ll give him another chance. They usually renew before the last fight on the contract, so we’ll see what they’ll do."

They won't cut him. he is technically the better fighter then Diego he just needs to improve his cardio. He was whoopin that ass in the first round then got tired, Diego just out cardioed him.

I had so much fun watching that ppv some awesome fights, but this is very true, a guy like Paulo could lose another 2 in a row and should not be in danger to be cut, his skill level is very high and he is fighting great fighters. He either wins, or makes the other guy fight at their very best to beat him, the guy is a slam dunk A level fighter.

He won't be cut... unless he loses his next fight.

He's one of the most exciting fighters around. As others have said, the UFC would have to be retarded to cut him.

I think a key factor to why Paulo lost his last fight was because of his aggressiveness. It looks like he is on kill mode the entire time, he never stops hunting for submissions! It makes for exciting fights and undeniably makes him a dangerous guy to face for anyone at 170. But man, he sure looked tired near the end of the 2nd, and i don't think it's a question of his cardio. Hard to keep up that kind of pace going for subs left and right, ask any grappler. Not to mention Diego fought an excellent fight. He has not looked that good in a long time and deserved that win. So it'd be stupid if UFC were to cut an exciting and tough guy like paulo, but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Yeah, I doubt they would give him a FOTN bonus and then turn around and cut him.
