Joseph Benavidez: 'I eat black belts for breakfast'

The world’s No. 4 ranked bantamweight, Joseph Benavidez, took the place of the injured Brian Bowles on a moment's notice vs Wagnney Fabiano at WEC 52.

“I’m always training,” Benavidez told MMAWeekly Radio.  “Anytime I can take a fight, I feel good doing it.  I was in shape, and (there is no better way) to get back on track than beating a great opponent, and showing people that I’m still one of the best in the world by going out there and beating another guy who is considered one of the best in the world.”

“After a loss (vis split decision to Dominic Cruz in their Aug. 18 title fight), definitely… can’t wait to be in the winning column again. I want to go out there and show people what I’m made of.”

“I love the match-up. (against jiu-jitsu black belt Wagnney Fabiano). My three most impressive fights have been against black belts in jiu-jitsu.  I like to say I eat black belts for breakfast. They’re just great match-ups for me.”

“Basically, all his fights in the WEC, he’s gone in there and laid on people. He gets the takedown, and he looks like a monster on top, but I’m like a greased pig out there.  No one is going to lay on me, so if that’s what he wants to do, he’s going to have a tough enough time getting me down, let alone laying on me.”

Benavidez was one judge away from being awarded the Bantamweight Championship back in August, and remains one of the most dangerous fighters in the weight class. If and when the UFC instates a flyweight division, however, we may see Benavidez truly shine. His sole issue at 135 lb. is his height, which puts him at a disadvantage in reach and was possibly the biggest reason he wasn't able to get the job done against Dominick Cruz. His fight with Fabiano should be a great bantamweight fight before the two fighters head to the UFC.

Bisping used the 'I eat blackbelts for breakfast' line in the buildup to the Wanderlei fight. Which I wouldn't be surprised if he got from HBL who I remember from when he was posting here used it in reference to Bisping. So Benavidez needs to get some new material, but he's still a great fighter.

The reason you can "smell" the finger pointers is because they have their fingers (as well as heads) up their asses

He should have left the "greased pig" part out of there. I can smell the finger points now...
