Cesar Gracie explains why Nick Diaz chose Strikeforce over UFC

by Mike Chiappetta | source: mmafighting.com

Diaz recently signed an extension with Strikeforce. Though Gracie could not discuss the exact terms, he said reports the contract was for a three-year deal were inaccurate.

He confirmed that the UFC was interested in Diaz but noted that the decision was ultimately made to stay with Strikeforce because Diaz's brother Nate and his main training partner Jake Shields also fight in the UFC's welterweight class.

Diaz, however, is not closing the door on a return to the UFC (he fought 10 times for the promotion between 2003-2006, going 6-4).

"There's definitely scenarios where I could see Nick back in the UFC," he said. "Right now though, we've got a very good contract with Strikeforce. They treat Nick very well. The terms of the contract are favorable, and as a manager, I'm happy with the contract."

WTF does that have to do with anything? I guarantee I'd fight my best friend and he'd do the same for the types of paydays Jones and Rashad would get, shit, we'd do it for a lot less than that. And that's real friendship, not some friendly training partner shit between two dudes who have known each other for what, a year or so?A few times on TUF guys who have been best friends and training partners have had to beat the shit out of each other just to try to get into the TUF house. That's real. Ken and Frank wanted to fight, Joe and Dan Lauzon have said several times they'd fight each other, and that's family. The AKA dudes have said this stuff too. The only reason these high level fighters pull this "I won't fight my friends" shit is because they think they have the power to do it. It's a power trip, and probably posturing in most cases, because with enough money they'd fight. But if Rashad and Bones were making chicken scratch and trying to get on TUF or something they'd fight in a heartbeat. It's this pseudo morality garbage that's annoying. And I don't care about the Cesar Gracie stuff either, those guys don't have to fight anyway. Someone earlier in the thread brought up the AKA comparison to get the point across that had Nick gone to the UFC there's so much talent in the division that there would be no reason to fight Jake or Nate. I don't believe Nick signed with Strikeforce because Shields and Nate are in the UFC. I think he did it because he was offered good money, is made a focal point of the promotion, and because he is a champion over there. From a career standpoint, Nick staying in Strikeforce is a great move for him. I don't buy the other stuff though.

Maybe I am just not "street" enough but I don't get how being in the cage and asking for a rematch (with the champ whom he had a very close fight with) constitutes starting it.

since when is nick .500? he went 6-4 in the ufc and most thing he got jobbed on 2 of those losses (riggs got his ass kicked)mayham needs a few wins before he tries to fight the champ in any division, he's got his hands more thatn full with kennedy who has been improving since the last mayham decision....if miller looses to kennedy hes fucked! losses to jacare and kennedy make him all but irrelevant in SF at 185.

If there's one thing we learned from the Mayhem fiasco, is that Diaz just likes to talk. Diaz is the Fedor of the lower weight classes. He's just happy being a legend in the mind of a niche group of fans, he's not actually interested in fighting the best.

Kos and Fitch are better than either Diaz bro and possibly Shields, too. BTW Kos and Fitch aren't "fags" because they haven't fought. Both have said IIRC that they'd fight each other if enough money was there. Since only the hardcores would want to see that fight and therefore there isn't a lot of money in that fight, the fight hasn't been made. AKA =/= the Jackson Camp love fest.
