Is Anderson Silva the greatest MMA fighter of all time?

by Jonathan Snowden | source: bloodyelbow.com

For years it's been a question that has caused millions of arguments on message boards all over the world. Who is the best fighter in the history of mixed martial arts? Was it the great Rickson Gracie, finishing all challengers and running a submission train on a hundred Japanese judoka and jiu jitsu aces in a single day? Perhaps it was Frank Shamrock, the sport's first believer in exercise science and the UFC's undefeated champion at 205 pounds. Some might put the crown on Fedor Emelianenko, who ruled the heavyweight division for much of the last decade.

Those people would all all be wrong.

Anderson Silva is an athlete beyond compare. His record inside the UFC's Octagon is umatched in the promotion's history.

Perhaps it is his destiny to be respected but never loved. Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Love him or hate him, we are all witnessing greatness every time he fights. At 35, his career is on it's final act. It's important we enjoy him every chance we get. There will never be another to compare.

I remember after his fight with Sonnen there were threads ALL over the UG asking how Anderson was #1 P4P over GSP after getting the piss beat out of him for 4 1/2 rounds. Now, he front kicks Belfort into Bolivion and he's the GOAT, not just #1 P4P but the GOAT...

I think GSP can beat Silva, to me GSP is the smarter fighter...he will have a gameplan that is superior to the Spiders and I see him winning...it may go all 5 rounds or it could be over in the 1st..who knows...I wouldn't bet on the fight but I believe GSP has become an overall master of all trades.

Nah.IMO you can't be called the GOAT when you fight people 2/3 your size 98% of the time.

Anderson beat a ADCC and Mundial Champ in Maia. Fedor fought one in Werdum and we saw how that went. Anderson has faced better competition than Fedor or GSP. Beat 2 Olympic Alternates in Hendo and Sonnen. GSP has never faced a wrestler of that caliber and never faced a Werdum or Maia. BJ is close, but BJ is from the next weight class down.

Beating GSP would solidify it even more.As of today, he has accomplished more than GSP and Fedor. So, yes, if the question is asked today, he is the GOAT and there is not a doubt in my mind. GSP just lost not too long ago and though he's been dominating every opponent, Anderson's been tapping them or KTFOing them. Fedor just got tapped out. All 3 are up there in the conversation but Anderson just upped himself last night, and imo, that should be pretty clear. The only problem is that like Fedor or Aoki or Bisping, Anderson doesnt get the credit because a lot of people dont like HIM. But his record is factual shit and speaks for itself. Anderson Silva is the current GOAT of MMA.
