Couture's son wins second pro fight

by Steve Cofield | source:

He's not exactly a chip off the block, but Ryan Couture is showing a pretty good skill set for a kid who only made an MMA career a goal a few years ago. The son of UFC legend Randy Couture, won his second pro fight with a rear-naked choke at 4:40 of the third round against Lee Higgins.

"I just want to continue to get more comfortable in there," Couture said. "My skills held up there pretty well to what they do in the gym. I want to just pursue that comfort level. I think getting almost 15 minutes in here was a big help."

Couture was ahead on the scorecards heading to the latter part of the fight before he landed the finishing move.

Pops is the exception and not the rule, I don't think Randy's longevity is the kind of thing that is passed from generation to generation.

If he has his father's good genetics than 28 years old is young, if he keeps improving he could easily be fighting at 40 just like pops. I hope he makes it to the big show one day, it would be really cool to have another Couture ripping thought the UFC.

I think Kim Couture fighting and sucking at it hasn't helped him any.  He's not an elite prospect, but he's not a tomato can either.

he showed improvement, wouldnt call him 'legit', just coming a long slowly, hopefully he will fight again soon, that staph infection delayed him a bit

What MahoneySucks said. The guy is as humble as they come and is making the most of his opportunities. So Strikeforce picked him up for the marquee name, he still came out and performed well, and it was on a Challengers card. He's said ideally he wants to fight every three months to get more experience, let's see what happens, but I expect he'll continue getting better and facing better opponents. It was a good win.

It was a good fight last night. Ryan showed a pretty good range of skills.

Labeling him as a "prospect" is a bit much this early on. But you gotta admit their is a huge advantage for a guy to have a father like Randy Couture. It's not just the name, it's the training, the mentoring, the experience he is able to get BECAUSE of who his dad is.

Roger Gracie and Ryan Couture should never be mentioned together.  Roger Gracie is a prospect based on his world championship grappling ability and the fact that his body is well suited to MMA.  The only reason anyone cares about Ryan Couture is because of who his father is. Ryan is not a terrible fighter, but he's not a big prospect either.  He's being put on main cards against made to order opposition to get him wins.
