Zach Kirk paralyzed for life, part II

source: sherdog.com

In April 2007, the Iowa legislature voted to de-regulate MMA. The sport would be legal -- there were not enough votes to ban MMA outright -- but the state would “get out of the regulation business.” The bill’s aim was to minimize the financial cost of MMA-related injuries to the state.

The UFC, as well as prominent Iowa MMA fighters and promoters, attempted to educate the Iowa legislature on the risks of unregulated MMA. They were ignored.

No thought was given to the human costs of unregulated MMA.

Two years later, when Kirk entered the ring for the last time, the state of amateur MMA in Iowa was a disgrace. Professional MMA was overseen by the state’s boxing authority, but the amateur sport was a free for all. No blood tests for HIV or Hepatitis were required. No proof of age. No proof of sobriety. No physicians ringside.

Prior to his fight, Kirk claims he had asked the promoter, Craig McIntosh, if he was carrying insurance for the fight. Of course, McIntosh allegedly assured him. It was only weeks later, laying paralyzed in a hospital bed facing wave after wave of medical bills, that Kirk discovered the truth. The insurance purchased by McIntosh covered injuries to the fans in attendance, but not injuries to the fighters in the ring.

In days, Kirk went bankrupt. The rest of Kirk’s medical care costs -- hundreds of thousands of dollars -- was paid for by the citizens of Iowa.

The only possible winner was the promoter. In a situation analogous to the national economic crisis occurring at the same time, the profits associated with amateur MMA were privatized -- kept by the promoter -- while the financial costs of those risks were borne by the taxpayers.

In the fall of 2009, public outrage with the disgraceful state of affairs in amateur MMA forced the Iowa legislature to reconsider MMA sanctioning and regulation. The Senate, which just two years prior had de-regulated MMA by a vote of 35-12, voted unanimously to subject amateur MMA to the same protections as professional MMA.

Yeah I did.  My family and friends were there, and I talked to the guy I was fighting and he seemed like a good enough guy and I didn;t want to screw him over.  I later found out craig was the guys boxing coach and the reff in the fight was the guys training partner.   Even though I am glad i fought.  I lost, but it was a good fight.

I fought for a craig once in iowa and I am almost positive it is the same promoter from the story.  I talked to him prior to the fights and he fed me a bunch of bullshit.  he told me we all needed blood tests, but then said some of the fighters didn't get them in time so we didn't actually need them.  Some of the amatuer fights in nebraska and iowa (this maybe have changed) dont allow chokes in the first round.  I guess they do that so fights don't end early??  but he assured me that chokes are allowed and that they would have someone with no more then 2 or 3 fights for me to fight since i didn't have very much experience.  at the time i only did BJJ for about 7 months and was 1 and 0.  When i showed up to the fights I found out he changed his mind and chokes aren't allowed in the first round, and they guy I was fighting had more experience and weighed more.   turns out he again lied to me about how much experience the guy have and he ended up being undefeated with numerous fights and weighed about ten poinds heavier than me. I googled his name and came across other accusations about him letting professional fighters fight at the amatuer level to feed them fights and being in business with a child molester

fuck man thats really sad. i hope some breakthrough in stem cell research comes around soon so him and others who had nerve damage can walk again. really really sad i hope somehow he can walk again one day."Prior to his fight, Kirk claims he had asked the promoter, Craig McIntosh, if he was carrying insurance for the fight. Of course, McIntosh allegedly assured him. It was only weeks later, laying paralyzed in a hospital bed facing wave after wave of medical bills, that Kirk discovered the truth. The insurance purchased by McIntosh covered injuries to the fans in attendance, but not injuries to the fighters in the ring."Thats fuckin bullshit. He only bought insurance for the fans in the audience? WTF is that? Whats gonna happen to a fan in the audience????????? Thats retarded. That promoter should get his spine broken also"...but the amateur sport was a free for all. No blood tests for HIV or Hepatitis were required. No proof of age. No proof of sobriety. No physicians ringside."Thats fucked up also. How the hell can you have guys fighting who arent blood tested and could easily spread aids and Hep C around in the fight? Im all for legalizing MMA everywhere and having lots of amateur and pro events but each one of them needs to hold high safety standards whether amateur or pro.How exactly did he break his neck anyway? How did it happen?I dunno if this would help but i think MMA fighters or any kind of athletes involved in contact sports (football, wrestling, boxing etc etc) need to really strengthen their necks as much as possible and do lots of neck bridges to not only help them in fighting but also to maybe prevent injuries like this (i remember when fedor got spiked on his head by randleman and he kept on going after). I never actually donated to any charities before but i may some day and i think stem cell research would be a really good cause to donate to since something like this could happen to ANYONE at any time not just in mma but any kind of freak accident in the world. Instead of people donating money all towards stem cell research, they would rather be fuckin stupid and send money to hopeless causes such as third world countries. FUCK THAT

Now South Dakota is a totally different story, and is just a matter of time before we see something like this happen up there as well.
