Brother in Law reports Sean Tompkins died of a heart attack

Well-known mixed martial arts trainer Shawn Tompkins died of a heart attack says his brother-in-law Sam Stout.

Tompkins, 37, died in his sleep Sunday. An autopsy was performed Monday.

Results are not available but Stout, who is also one of Tompkins UFC fighters, says it was a heart attack.

"I don't know what to say," Stout says. "It's not supposed to be happen to a healthy 37-year-old person. Who would think he had to get checked out for that?"

Stout says funeral arrangements will be made today. Stout is the brother of Emilie Tompkins, Tompkins wife.

Tompkins' manager, Gary Ibarra of Athletic Management & Representation Group, today told MMAjunkie.com that the renowned trainer had an enlarged heart and major blockages in his arteries that may have contributed to his death.

"Shawn's family has a major history of heart issues," Ibarra said.

"Heart disease is something that's hereditary, no matter how much you eat correctly and exercise," Ibarra said.

Do not jump to any conclusions about why he had a heart attack. It could just be genetic.I am 37. I have a blood cancer. I didn't drink till I was 21 and have never smoked in my life. Excercised 5 days a week. Trained BJJ since 96. It just happens I guess.Respect to Shawn and Peace to his family and friends.

I'm 33 and on cholesterol meds. My grandpa died at 40 of a heart attack.

I need to know. I have infrequent bouts of tachycardia and while doctors think nothing of it, it's scary stuff. I'm in awesome shape, but still an enlarged heart is a... killer. And Tompkins certainly was apparently in awesome shape.X-Rays, echo and all that should be done as infrequently as possible, as they do have risks associated to them, but ONE such test is enough to see if someone has got the issue.Now, the last doc I ask the test REFUSED to prescribe it! And it's hard in my area to find a doctor. I need a good one ASAP. When a tailgater makes me rage out in traffic I can feel my heart acting funny (!)

Unfortunately a lot of heart problems are not identified until someone is already dead. There is a hospital in my area that offers cardiovascular screenings for $79. I am going to get one done since there is some history of heart problems in my family.This is a description of the test:Using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, the new mobile unit can perform an array of on-site tests aimed at detecting all manner of risky health conditions including carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, high blood pressure and abnormal blood glucose levels.Seems like a good investment for only $79.
