Florian defends Barboza vs. Pearson commentary

Joe Rogan remained in the US to film Fear Factor this past Saturday night at UFC 134 in Brazil. Replacing him alongside Mike Goldberg was #1 featherweight contender Kenny Florian, who has filled in for Rogan in the past.

Florian came under fire from some quarters during the Edson Barboza vs. Ross Pearson. During the bout, Florian seemed to show favoritism towards the Brazilian lightweight, rarely crediting the Brit for his pressure and his boxing. Barboza eventually won a split decision.

“The way I saw it, I thought Ross fought brilliantly,” said Florian. “However, I just thought that Barboza was consistently throwing more punches and landing more shots. Ross did well in every round, but I had Barboza winning 29-28 pretty clearly.”

“I thought the knockdown, the variety of striking, and Barboza thwarting the takedowns of Pearson’s were the difference. By no means did he blow Pearson out of the water but I thought he won 29-28.”

Florian’s assessment was backed up by two of the three judges, who also saw the fight in favor of Barboza by the score of 29-28.

No, it's really not. There are hundreds of punches in a fight, sometimes they graze, sometimes it looks like they land and don't, sometimes it looks they don't but do, some are partially blocked, some are fully blocked,  and the list goes on and on. The only part that is closest to a fact is a completely missed punch, which doesn't factor into the equation anyway. As I said, it's one knowledgeable person with the ability to rewind tape and focus on counting. That's it. It's the closest thing to stats we have, but it cannot possibly be factual, just like their round and overall judging can't be. TO edno777: There are also a lot of aspects of a live fight that don't translate through a broadcast, whether you rewind in slow-motion or not. Also, "the number" of strikes and takedowns is NOT scoring a fight, which is the unified rules have several sections that involve much more than "counting".

by far the dumbest thing I ever read in my life.1) Edson was backpeddling the whole fight2) Edson was litteraly running away from Ross the last few seconds3) ROss was asking Edson to punch him instead Edson ran away4) Ross outkicked Edson5) While Kenny was saying Edson is fast with his kicks Ross was checking 90% of them6) Edson landed about 3 punches to the head the rest where as accurate as me trying to throw a rock to hit a bar that is 1000 miles away.7) Ross having more accruacy lol against a Muay Thai champyou see how easy and childish that was.
