Frankie Edgar finishes Gray Maynard in 4th to close trilogy

by Michael David Smith | source: mmafighting.com

The third fight between Edgar and Maynard got off to an explosive start and had an even more explosive ending Saturday night at UFC 136, with Edgar winning by fourth-round knockout after nearly getting knocked out himself at the start of the fight.

It was the third fight between the two great lightweights, and the first one Edgar won. Maynard beat Edgar in 2007, and the two of them fought to a draw on New Year's Day this year. Now Edgar has finally beaten Maynard and eliminated any doubt that he's the best lightweight in the world.

"This ain't easy fighting someone three times," Edgar said afterward. "Gray forced me to bring the best out of myself."

If Maynard goes out and smashes 3 Top 10 guys or something like that, he absolutely will get another shot. Also, there's a decent chance that somebody else will win the title before Maynard retires. For example, if Melendez beats Edgar, then Maynard can get another shot without fighting Edgar a 4th time.

I totally understand the need to get someone else a shot and if quadropology isn't a word then it really needs to be. I guess my question is, what if Maynard runs through everyone on his way back to a title shot very quickly then how do you deny him a shot? Granted maybe that would be maybe a year or year and a half down the road but it's not unrealistic to think is it?

To be the champ you got to beat the champ.Gray has failed to do so in his last two attempts. Let's move along and get some of the other contenders a shot at the title. Frankie is a well deserved champion and IF there is to be a re-match and a final ending to the quadropology (is that even a word?) I hope its a couple of years in the future.

This may be a weird question but how is this the end to the trilogy? With Edgar winning one, Maynard winning one and the other one being a draw, wouldn't it make for the need for a fourth fight eventually?
