MMA pioneer and legendary referee “Big” John McCarthy talks with Full Contact Fighter about why he feels a neutral sanctioning body, not promoters, should be the organization responsible for choosing the fighters who compete in championship bouts.
McCarthy also discusses the state of judging in MMA and where he feels it can be improved.
"The biggest problem you have is right now, with promotions in MMA, everything is set off of the promotions, and promoters are in control of the belts. They're in control of the belts. So if you're a fighter within a promotion and you're really good, it doesn't matter how good you are because if that promoter doesn't want to give you that title shot, he doesn't have to. Whereas at least if it's a sanctioning body with rankings, there's a mandatory step ladder"
