Nick Diaz bloodies BJ Penn, wins unanimous decision

All Nick Diaz needed was the taste of blood.

The former Strikeforce champion, who infamously cost himself a title shot with Georges St-Pierre when he skipped pre-event media commitments, instead took out his frustrations on B.J. Penn and battered the former UFC champ into the night's second career retirement.

The fight headlined the pay-per-view main card of Saturday's UFC 137 event, which took place Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Both fighters showed impressive striking accuracy in the first round, one in which Penn took Diaz's back but couldn't capitalize once on the mat. But on the feet, he matched Diaz's punches and landed the type of accurate blows the former Strikeforce champ has rarely dealt with in recent fights.

That was one hell of a fight.  Gave me goosebumps.  Glad to see the heart of BJ in that third round. Fight of the year IMO.

When I read the fight it sounded like BJ owned in the 1st, then Diaz mauled him in 2 and 3. Then I watched it, by the end of the first BJ looked like he was gassed. Nick still looks fantastic, and I'd never miss a Diaz bro fight, but I did in fact think BJ was out of shape after 1. He needs to go back to training with that guy he used while on his 155 tear. Can not wait to see how/if GSP deals with the in your face style Nick brings to the cage.Nick Diaz, the true leader of Occupy Wallstreet.

Im not trying to discredit diaz, I just don't want to be blinded by a performance that was accentuated by penn gassing. If penn hadn't gassed his counter punches wouldn't have let diaz find his rhythm. Of course that's a big if. Diaz still deserves credit for the win, he really showed up well prepared. So to sum it up, I think that diaz won because he was the better athlete, not the better fighter.

Yah BJ probably got lazy this fight.. He use to never gas in his win streaks when he was with the markovich brother...actually he lasted all those strikes and never went down.. he's still the prodigy in my book..

Diaz began to find his rhythm in the second and started to use his jab and pepper the body with shots more. BJ lost because Diaz took control of the fight and wore out BJ.
