Pettis wants title shot with win over Lauzon

by Paul Fladten | source: uscombatsports.com

After both Pettis and Lauzon openly pined for the matchup against one another the UFC brass awarded them a date at the Satiama Super Arena in Japan on February 25. The Roufusport fighter said that the bout with Lauzon is just what he needs to get himself back into title contention.

“I thought that it’s a great matchup,” Pettis told US Combat Sports. “Joe Lauzon is just coming off a Melvin Guillard win he’s breaking in the top ten and in the top five. I want to fight top five guys so I can get that title shot back. Henderson’s getting a title shot and that’s supposed to be my position so I want to go back for that. Fighting a guy like Joe Lauzon and winning that impressively would get me right back in that title shot.”

While Lauzon has shown the ability to surprise opponents with a slick submission game in the past, Pettis said that all of his techniques match up favorably with his UFC 144 opponent.

“I definitely think everybody I fight against my striking is going to be my strength but I’m getting better everywhere. My wrestling is getting better, my jiu-jitsu is just as good as his I think, and for me it’s just a matter of having a good game plan and following through.”

Aren't you that same poster that support Chael Sonnen and everything he does? Talk about hypocrite. He is the king of his mouth > Accomplishments.

No, they don't. I never said they do. But to claim that every fighter must beat Guida to be deserving of a title is idiotic. ;-)

Pettis is already asking for a title shot?he should be worrying about Joe.too many people have slept on Lauzon and paid the price for it.

most annoying myth ever. pettis won the 2nd and 3rd round.the 5th was straight domination by pettis up until the kick. he even had bendo tripping and stumbling from how scared he was.did you all forget that bendo was on a similar tear and that pettis was given basically no chance against bendo the first time?

Pettis is legit, but I think he'd be better served if he focused on Lauzon first. I don't think he deserves a title shot if he beats Lauzon, but he deserves to be in contention for a #1 contender fight. Maybe against the winner of Cerrone/Diaz. We also have to consider if Bendo beats Edgars, will there be a rematch?

So. 1st UFC fight, you get mauled by Guida. If you win your next fight, you deserve a title shot? Am I missing something?

I may have to watch it again to confirm my memory of the fight...I remember bendo being an inch away from an easy submission victory early...I could be wrong since it was a while ago...was an awesome fight either way
