Cung Le: Refs need to watch for strikes to back of head more

Former Strikeforce fighter Cung Le was defeated on Saturday night by Wanderlei Silva. The two would battle back and forth through the first round before Silva would land a devasting knee to the face of Le, which he then followed up with a succession of punches on the ground which prompted the referee to step in. Some in the media though the stoppage might be too soon, and Le himself seemed to think the strikes may not have been legal:

I think he's complaining because IF YOU LOOK AT THE 2nd GIF, you can clearly see the Ref stopped the fight because of consecutive shots to the back of the head. bad stoppage.

3 shots to the back of the head and the following ones before the ref broke it were to the side.

Unfortunately its a side effect of striking when ground fighting and grappling is involved. Unlike boxing or even kickboxing where opponents fight mostly head on, in MMA its almost impossible to predict where your strike will land while the opponent is weaving and ducking for position or in some cases turning away just to get the ref to call BOH shots. The only places where a ref can really police the rule is in clinches and non erratic ground exchanges otherwise its russian roulette trying to pick the bad shot among a dozen good ones.

did anyof you that are mocking Cung see the second replay? Silva was crushing the back of his head. a competent ref would've done something other than awarding victory to the purpetrator.
