Edgar: I feel like a champion more and more every day

No matter the term used to describe him, Edgar is happy as long as he’s the champion.

“Being a champion in this sport insures you never run out of challenges,” Edgar said. “With every fight my confidence grows. I begin to feel like a champion more and more every day. The UFC is the best organization in the world and if you are the best here, you’re the best in the world without a doubt.

With the Penn and Maynard chapters to his career closed for now, Edgar now looks forward to his next challenge inside the UFC's Octagon. "The Answer" won't have to wait long, as he will defend his title against number one contender Benson Henderson in February at UFC Japan. Henderson emerged from a crowded pack of contenders to get his shot at championship gold, and Edgar is looking forward to the match-up and being a part of the UFC's first return to Japan since UFC 29 in 2000.

"I think Ben Henderson deserves this title shot," Edgar said. "The lightweight division is one of the deepest and one most closely contested weight classes in the UFC and [Ben] came in and beat three top ranked guys. If you match up any one of the guys ranked 1 through 10, those fights can go a lot of different ways. He has an exciting style, always brings the fight and I know this is going to be great for the fans.

Frankie may have only defended against two guys, but at least he got his belt on his first try and kept it...it took BJ how long to get a belt? And how long to finally defend one?Lost to pulver, drew with Uno, took Hughes' belt but never defended it...over a span of 5 years. Took BJ 7 years to finally defend a belt....Frankie has defended his multiple times, in half that amount of time.

He had his chance at lightweight and came up short, so he left the divsion to compete at welterweight, which has bigger, better fighters, including a much stronger champion than Edgar, and that's supposed to be Penn taking the easy way out?

He took the easy way out by not training hard and taking the rematch serious but instead after just left the division. Penn knew good and well he will never be champion at lw.

if there is ever a man who EARNED his title. it's FRANKIE.Benson is going to be a tough match, but this is going to be a great fight any which way it turns out.I'm not even really a "fan" of edgar's ... but he's earned my respect, that's for sure.

The entire point of me bringing up Penn wasnt to pump him up and make excuses for his loss. The point is Frankie has had to defend his title against only 2 fighters thus far. Penn who was a slack at the time and Maynard, who ended with one draw and the second fight was beating the cat shit out of Frankie for most of the fight. Everyone needs to stop trying to read to into comments and focus on the discussion. Stop trying to be trouble makers.
