Rousey: 'Cyborg' fight needs to happen

by John Morgan | source: mmajunkie.com

"I think it's just too soon marketing-wise," Rousey told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I know that I'm capable of beating any woman in the world at any moment, but I think that if me and Cris 'Cyborg' were to fight today, I don't think that many people would be hyped up about it or be looking forward to it. That's why I've been so adamant about moving down at getting the belt at 135 first so when a fight between me and Cris 'Cyborg' does eventually happen, it will be a big deal."

It's an interesting point, especially when one considers Santos recently fought for the first time in 18 months and that the future of female fighting was uncertain until this past week, when UFC president Dana White confirmed Strikeforce would indeed remain operational for the foreseeable future.

Rousey, currently a featherweight, believes the best way to help build interest for the matchup is to drop to 135 pounds and take on current champ (and budding Twitter rival) Miesha Tate. In Rousey's eyes, the process would allow her to gain valuable in-cage experience, as well as increase her visibility by wrapping a belt around her waist.

The outspoken Rousey has developed some critics who believe she should fight Santos right now rather than looking to leave the weightclass, and some feel she may be ducking a fight with the Brazilian brawler.

Rousey scoffs at the accusation.

"There's a big difference between timing and running," Rousey said. "I'm trying to time things appropriately so it will be great for women's MMA in general, not just me.

Yeah but unlike Budd Ronda is gonna get stomped out by Cyborg. Besides for all the running Ronda does she is probably better suited as a sprinter. Don't worry Cyborg will catch her and send her running yet again, this time back to judo competition.Btw a fighter who is even remotely confident of beating another fighter doesn't constantly make excuses for not fighting them. Just a little dispatch from the world of reality. You may now return to the world of fantasy.

It's true she has man shoulders and an overall epic physique. The only girl in MMA who can match her for physique is Julia Budd. Google image search her and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Cyborg will send Rousey home in a box.  Nobody beats her MAN STRENGTH and her ATTITUDE.     You better FIGHT LIKE A MAN, cuz I will!     I know a lot of men who wouldl kill for a pair of shoulders like those.

He's got some serious points. It baffles me that Ronda wants to fight the champion of her own category at a lower weight, forcing both of them to drop or do a "catchweight", except when you can't have a catchweight when you are already a 145 lber. She never fought at 135 lbs, but she is willing to make Cyborg drop to that weight (knowing she possibly can't!) to fight her.Ronda should never call Cyborg out if she is not willing to fight her or if thinks she can't fight her now.

Talk and hype? Ronda claiming she wanted both belts is large part of the reason why a whole lot of naive souls approved of her jumping in front of Kaufman for an immediate shot at Tate's 135lb belt. That's not called talk and hype, that's called being a lying, cynical, opportunist.Btw I am always hearing Ronda use words like marketable match ups, marketability, marketing ect. What in the world makes Ronda some marketing and matchmaking genius. Maybe she should be a marketing executive instead of an MMA fighter.

its talk and hype.. dont take it all so seriously.. thats it.. she wants to get paid.. she spent tons of money for a shiny olympic medal and now wants to get paid to do what she loves... cut her some slack.. in the end its going to be the best thing ever for womens mma anyhow..
