Mark Munoz: It will be me, not Chael Sonnen, fighting Anderson Silva in Rio

by Derek Bolender | source: mmajunkie.com

Mark Munoz and Chael Sonnen square off for the right to face Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight title on Jan. 28 at at UFC on FOX 2 in Chicago's United Center.

"They don't need to have security around (Sonnen) because he ain't going to Brazil," Munoz told MMAjunkie.com Radio. "I kind of feel disrespected a little bit, but you know what? It is what it is, and it ain't going to happen."

"I think (fighting on network television) is going to be a different vibe because I know there's going to be many more people watching. But at the same time, it is the same. I'm going to go in there, and I'm going to do what I've trained for. And I can't look at it more than that because if I do, I (will) put too much pressure on myself."

"Guys freeze inside the octagon. I don't ever want to do that. I'm just going to see Chael across the cage, and we're going to put on a good show."

"I feel like when I was in college every practice was geared toward a national championship. At Oklahoma State, if you weren't a national champion, you weren't anything. It was a lot of pressure that was on me, and I had to deal with that."

"It does give me an advantage," said Munoz of a wrestling match he had vs. Chael in college in which the Oregon athlete attempted an illegal knee bar. "Because, in wrestling, it's whoever can break whoever's will. And I actually tried to do that because he tried to break my leg. In return, I tried to break his will. So he knows what I'm capable of, and I know MMA is different, but still. We're going at it."

"There's a lot of different ways to be able to win the fight. I know he's developed his MMA game, and I have too, so you're definitely going to see a fight that has to be watched because we're going to be slinging stuff all around like kicks, elbows, knees and everything."

I wrestled DI, i'm going to let some of you in on a little secret. MMA wrestling is A LOT different than collegiate(folkstyle) wrestling. Just because Munoz beat him in college doesn't mean he wins this fight. IMO, Munoz didn't look that good against Leben. Leben even managed a few takedowns on him. Leben for some reason gassed bad after the 1st,and Munoz's condtioning didn't look much better. Chael comes in ready to go hard for 5 Rds, so Munoz better be ready to go....Sonnen wins by Sub (Arm Triangle) in the 3rd....

Well, I would say that DEFENSIVE wrestling should be the most important for this match. While Sonnen has displayed better offensive wrestling for MMA, I would say that Munoz has shown better defensive wrestling. You can look at their common opponent in Maia to see how each handled somewhat mediocre takedowns. ;-) I would say that overall MMA wrestling is pretty damn close once you factor in the defensive side of it.

Against Munoz?Maia didn't get clowned at all...it was a close fight and Maia almost knocked Munoz out with a jab.

no no no please dont associate me with people like this munoz showed in the leben fight that he has nothing for the top guys that doesnt mean he is a bad fighter, just not top material at this point chael would ruin his weekend and anderson silva would have fun with him. he might be able to beat Stann on his BEST night

MMA wrestling has to go to chael...a match they had in a college many many many years ago isn't exactly relevant to comparing them today. Chael has consistently shown that his timing for takedowns and wrestling in MMA is far superior to Munoz's.Striking is close, munoz has more power without a doubt but chael is crisper.Ground game, well, if youre as experienced as you say you would realize that chael trains BJJ and just says that shit to get under people's skin. I honestly doubt either guy could submit the other. Munoz just hasn't been as impressive as chael over the last 2-3 years.

Silva/Sonnen 2 please. As an Andy fan that's the match I most want to see. I like Mark but I gotta root for Chael in this one.
