Nate Quarry: Catch wrestling rules the ultimate grappling style for MMA
From: Nate 'Rock' Quarry I won't pretend to be an expert on Catch as Catch Can wrestling but... From the books I've read, back around 1900 wrestling was the biggest sport in the world. Athlete like Farmer Burns and Gotch, can never remember if his first name is Carl or Frank, one is a phony, but Gotch won the world title from the German I believe. My understanding is that you can lose by being pinned or by being tapped out. In my mind this is the ultimate grappling style for MMA. While you do see quite a few taps from the bottom, it's WAY easier to learn how not to get tapped from the top than to learn how to apply say a triangle to a sweaty guy with no neck. There's a few books around that really talk about the history. Check them out. It's just a reminder that nothing is new under the sun. What the Gracies did was find an incredible way to market something that the public had forgotten about. And of course they took what had basically been watered down to a kata back to its roots as an effective fighting style. My two cents. Related MMA gear from the UG Store
