Vera: Boxing is done after Mayweather/Pac

Vera was asked about his activities on the night of December 3rd, 2011, and whether or not he watched the Bisping-Mayhem Ultimate Fighter 14 finale event at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada or whether he was interested in the rematch between boxing stars Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito in New York on the same night.

Vera’s answer was quick to the point, as he insisted that when it comes to boxing, a fight between superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is all that matters to him.

“Bisping and Mayhem,” said Vera. “I don’t really care about boxing anymore. Until Pacquiao and Mayweather fight, I don’t really care anymore. That’s the last fight I think I’m gonna watch of boxing anyways. I think after that, boxing’s over. It’s all about MMA.”

Strong words from Vera but there are several boxing insiders who would disagree. Expect more on this topic in the coming days.

Boxing had more PPV buys this year than in 1999. There were only two fights in 1999 that broke 1 millions buys, Holyfield vs. Lewis and Oscar v. Trinidad. Boxing had three in 2011 and a strong 600 000 buys for Cotto/Margarito. In the entire year of 1998, boxing didn't have a single PPV that did anywhere near 1 million PPV buys. In 2010, there were two cards that did 1 million plus buys, plus another 800 000 buys for PAC/Clottey. Lennox Lewis could only dream of being as big a draw as PAC or Mayeather are. Unless he was fighting Tyson or Holyfield his ppv numbers were horrible.Yeah obviously a real steep decline there.

Boxing will never be a topic of household/watercooler discussion as a lifestyle until the heavyweights come around. A HUGE question mark. Otherwise, there will always be Manny and Pac fighting their competitors and creating some cause for excitement ever so occasionally.

Are you suggesting boxing is as popular in this country now as it was in 1999? It was dying when there was little competition. Now it's in a tailspin. Only the diehards fail to see this. Give me some Lennox and I'm game. This product is not what it was.

The only way that happens is if he develops devastating one punch power or turns heel like Mayweather during the build up to a high profile fight so that people will pay to see him lose. Don't get me wrong. I like Ward a lot, but casuals aren't going to pay to see a guy with his style. Sad thing is that if there were a fighter with skills like Ward's from a country like the UK or Germany, he would be a national star there.
