Miller vs. Diaz booked for UFC on FOX 3 event

Jim Miller is coming off a win versus Melvin Guillard this past weekend at the UFC on FX event. Nate Diaz is coming off a big win over Donald Cerrone at the end of 2012. Both are considered near the top of the lightweight division, and today Dana White announced that the two would square off on May 5th in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Our 3rd FOX fight May 5th at the IZOD Center in New Jersey will feature Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller!!! Nate = 3 sub and 5 FON Jim = 3 SON!!

The event will live on FOX. It is unsure at this time if this bout will air as the main event or as part of the televised FOX card. The preliminary bouts are expected to air on FX and Fuel TV.

miller is above pettis/lauzon. both pettis and lauzon have losses to guys not even in the title picture anymore. Miller's only loss since 2009 is the #1 contender (Bendo), and his previous loss is the previous #1 contender (maynard).

"This makes no sense. You have your management say "we want a big fight" not "oh, Billy Buttfuck dropped out of his fight with Ned No-name? Sure, we'll take that fight." Lets explore this. You seem to know enough about the business to have realistic expectations. You tell the UFC you want big fights and they offer you 2 guys. Neither meets your criteria for a big fight. Do you accept or sit out hoping for something better months down the line? "You don't have to follow schedules. Obviously if you fill in a sudden gap against Mr Nobody this weekend, you're probably not going to be considered available when it's time to pick an opponent for Guida next month." But didnt we just establish that this athlete takes short notice fights? Which the UFC loves and endears them to you? So why couldnt he be ready again to take on an available bigger name with less time between bouts? Its certainly easier for an athlete to stay in shape for another bout soon after, than it is to get into shape on short notice. The real issue that youre failing to address is that Miller wasnt being given concistent big name bouts. Not that he wasnt available for them when the opportunity was coming up. "The way the division "played out" for Miller was he kept taking worthless fights and thus never got moved up. " Some of his fights were against lower regarded guys. But Tibau, Bocek, Danzig, etc were by no means worthless. Miller legitimately established himself as a force in the division. Rather than guys who fight 2-3 times and then get rushed into a title shot based on hype or convenience for the UFC's scheduling. By the time Miller gets a title shot he'll be a thoroughly grizzled son of a bitch with a shitload of cage time. It just would be nice to see some consistency as these guys do not have a set period of guaranteed health and prime. "Miller beat some lower guys, got bumped up to Maynard and lost one-sidely. Beat a bunch more lower guys, got bumped up to Henderson and lost one-sidedly. Now he's getting the high profile fights everyone wanted, so everyone should be happy." Thats a convenient way of labeling it. But how "up" and established was Maynard as the time? Dont agree with that loss being a case of him not being ready for such a jump up as much as that particular opponent and his style. THe same with Bendo Smooth. Coming up from a loss in the WEC, and wins over Bocek and Guida didnt make Benson too high level for gym. He as a particular opponent caused problems. Youre free to disagree. But we're on the same page in that it looks like Miller is now going to finally start being given the "name" matchups to put him in that upper echelon in the casual fan's mind. He's certainly more than paid his dues.

" All Im saying is that there should be real consistentcy as to how the divisions are playing out and merit-based title shots regardless of how much one guy dies his hair or is previously famous from pro wrestling. " How do you determine one fighter's "merit" relative to another? Fightmatrix.com? What were Edgar's pro wrestling or hair color credentials? The squeaky wheel gets the grease; the guy who takes short notice fights against nobodies will continue to do so. Miller beat some lower guys, got bumped up to Maynard and lost one-sidely. Do not understand people being reluctant for Diaz to be on FOX. If Nate acts out a little bit it would be great for rating because lets face it people,American especially love the kind of behavior the Diaz brothers are known for. More importantly,Nick and Nate always show a tremendous amount of respect towards there opponents after the fights the have. Something the general audience will surely appreciate. And because there fighting style is so appealing i think the would be general embraced. Then again some people might be turned off but the will still tune in to watch next time around (because they will be passionate in their dislike hence would like to see them fail).As for the fight,in my eyes it would be fair that the winner will take the number one contender spot.Miller obviously deserves it for a long time and while the case of Nate is a bit more shaky (why did he ever moved to welterweight) an as impressive performance against Miller would make the pick valid.In the end it will be a great fight between two of the best fighters in the division.

should be awesome. rooting for miller on this one. he will take it. not cause diaz is weak, skinny or i am under estimating him. just that miller is pretty darn good at bjj and he won't be scared to take diaz down. and probably push him all the way through.

Im baffled as to how you think this is a practical and reasonable point. Miller steps up and quickly establishes himself as a consistent winner in the UFC. Not to even mention needing to provide for his family as a full time fighter(which is VERY difficult for a number of guys in the UFC). How was Miller going to follow the schedules of other big names to try and hope he was pitched them as matchups? Did you really think this through in your head? Mike Constantino is a fantastic manager, but even he cant tell the UFC what matches to make. Title shots have historically been random and surprising just as often as theyve been obvious and consistently climbed to. Remember Frankie losing to Gray and then getting his shot off of a random nonsensical matchup with UFC newcomer Veach?(who was awesome btw like a combination of an office refrigerator and a stick of dynamite) Had Frank/Gray not gone to a third fight, the entire LW contender scene might well have worked itself out differently. All Im saying is that there should be real consistentcy as to how the divisions are playing out and merit-based title shots regardless of how much one guy dies his hair or is previously famous from pro wrestling.
