Holloway, a 20-year-old who turned pro just 17 months ago, replaced injured Ricardo Lamas, who himself was a replacement for injured Erik Koch. Despite his opponent largely being an unknown to casual fans, Poirier was well aware of his striking skills, which is probably the reason he took the fight to the mat once Holloway opened up with strikes in the first minute of the fight.
Once on the mat, Poirier worked for an armbar and couldn't get it, but he smoothly transitioned into a triangle choke, rolled to the mount position with it, and then got the tap-out when he added an armbar to the attempt.
The end came at the 3:23 mark of the opening round.

A rare two-point deduction for accidental low blows cost Alex Caceres a victory.
After twice connecting on the illegal shots, Caceres was deducted two points in the second round, and fellow bantamweight Edwin Figueroa squeaked by him for a dubious split-decision victory.
The preliminary-card bout was part of UFC 143 and aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook. It preceded a pay-per-view main card at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Despite the win, Figueroa was in anything but a celebratory mood.

As mounting punches clearly took their toll, Matt Brown finally landed the fight-ending blow.
Facing fellow welterweight scrapper Chris Cope, Brown chipped away with dirty boxing before staggering his opponent with a right hook to the ear that set up a second-round knockout victory.
The preliminary-card bout was part of UFC 143 and aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook. It preceded a pay-per-view main card at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center.
The first round proved evenly matched with "The Ultimate Fighter" veterans, though Brown appeared to take the lead with dirty boxing and some heavy right hands late in the round.

Although traditionally a lightweight fighter and clearly undersized for Riddle, Martinez quickly displayed stellar striking and footwork, and he landed a series of power shots in the first round. Riddle remained active, but Martinez moved forward fearlessly, was quicker to the punch, and opened some facial cuts while winning the round.
Riddle attempted to close the distance in the second round, but Martinez easily shook him off and landed counter-punches. Left-right combinations were especially effective, and the speed of his punches troubled Riddle. Not until he landed some bruising body kicks and knees did Riddle create some problems for his opponent. Riddle's late rally left the round a toss-up (and it ultimately proved to be the deciding frame).
Riddle's kicks – both to the legs and body – were the story of the third round, and Martinez clearly was slowed by the damage of them, which left his ribs and legs badly bruised. Martinez continued landing with punches, but Riddle shot and scored a pair of takedowns, and he closed out the fight with some heavy ground and pound.
